A transgender is either a male with the body of a female (FtM), or, a female with the body of a male MtF). This means their gender is not determined by their genatalia. (Even though it's common to think that is the case, it never is.) A transgender has NOT undergone a gender change operation. Transgenders who do undergo a gender change operation will then become transsexuals. A transperson should always be referred to by their correct pronouns. In other words, do not call them by their biological gender, but rather what they identify as. A FtM should be called he/him/his, and a MtF should be called she/her/hers. Some transpeople have gender dysphoria. This means that they are extremely uncomfortable in their own skin. Some transpeople, on the other hand, are NOT gender dysphoric. This does not mean they are not transgender. Also, transpeople come to terms with their gender at different rates and in different ways. It doesn't make any difference whether a transperson decided they are transgendered at 4 years old or 60. Some may think they are just gay, or go as genderfluid / androgynous because they don't want to face the problems that come with being transgendered. Transgenders can be gay, lesbian, straight, bisexual, pansexual, asexual, or any other sexuality. Their sexuality is completely seperate from their gender.
Wyatt: I'm a MtF transgender.
Gage: Wow, really? My brother is FtM. We should all get together sometime.

Someone who identifies as a gender other than what they were assigned at birth. Currently, if a baby is born with a vagina, they are assigned female at birth, or afab, and if they are born with a penis, they are assigned male at birth, or amab. Cisgender people identify with the sex they were assigned at birth, while transgender people don't.
Transgender is an umbrella term, containing men who are afab (trans men), women who are amab (trans women) and people assigned either sex that feel like both or neither genders (non-binary or genderqueer). Some trans people may take hormones or undergo surgery to make their body match their gender, and to treat dysphoria. Others are perfectly fine with their body, and only want minor or no changes. However, unless they feel comfortable discussing it with you, it is extremely rude and invasive to ask a trans person if they are on hormones or if they've had surgery yet.
Note that a trans person doesn't have to fit into any gender role. Much like cis men and women, a trans man can be feminine, while a trans woman can be masculine.
Jamie was assigned male at birth, but is female. She is a transgender woman, is taking estrogen, and has plans for bottom surgery in the future.
Max was assigned female at birth, but is male. He is a trans man, but has no plans for hormones or surgery.
Riley was assigned male at birth, but goes back and forth between feeling masculine, feminine, and somewhere in the middle. Xe is genderfluid, and has no dysphoria, except for on days when xe wants to female pass.
Yael, the author of this article, was assigned female at birth, but doesn't really feel like any gender. They are genderqueer, and want top surgery.

Transgender is someone who like all the other gay subgroups has psychological variance in terms of how masculine or feminine they are socially in relation to their sex. They have developed a form of depression known as "gender dysphoria" and attempt to alter their body to change into the opposite sex.
Jim doesn't want to be a feminine boy so he calls himself transgender and dresses like a woman.

A transgender is a person who is either female/male and just doesn't feel right being that sex. They feel the gender they are is not right, and that they should be the opposite sex or just not have a gender at all.

If there is a MTF trans, or a FTM trans that has nothing to do with their sexuality. Just because someone is a trans does not automatically make them gay. Some girls will like guys, become trans and still like guys. Not all guys have to like girls, and not all girls must like guys. It's not a fucking rule.

It's not a fucking rule to not be a trans. It's not a fucking rule to consider your self a girl if you have a vagina, or a guy if you have a penis. If you feel like you are not right as the gender you were born with, there is nothing wrong with that.

There is nothing wrong with Transgenders, they are human beings just like all of us. Gender has nothing to do with life, and even though it's not right to make fun of trans, people still do and still will because people are sick.

Transgenders are normal people, and they are proud to be who they are.
Kyler was born a girl, but dresses like a guy, acts like one, and is currently taking testosterone, and she considers herself a male, she is a transgender.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), published by the American Psychiatric Association, lists gender dysphoria as a mental illness. The condition is also sometimes known as: gender identity disorder, gender incongruence or transgenderism. Contrary to the transgendered people raging on here it's not something that's "normal" and these people need therapy rather than surgery.
Jimmy thought he had been born as the wrong gender so he had a sex change and is now Transgender.
