This salute gets its name from its original use among soldiers in the Roman Empire. Although it it was commonly used by fascists, national socialists and other third-positionists in the twentieth century, it was not exclusive to these groups. For example, American school children were taught to throw up Romans while reciting the pledge of allegiance prior to World War II.
