The New York Dolls were punk rock before there was a term for it. Building on the Rolling Stones' dirty rock & roll, Mick Jagger's androgyny, girl group pop, the glam rock of David Bowie and T. Rex, and the Stooges' anarchic noise, the New York Dolls created a new form of hard rock that presaged both punk rock and ]heavy metal]. Their drug-fueled, shambolic performances influenced a generation of musicians in New York and London, who all went on to form punk bands. And although they self-destructed quickly, the band's two albums remained two of the most popular cult records in rock & roll history.

Born John Anthony Genzale July 12, 1952 in Queens, New York. He was into the New York Glam scene and speed. Johnny was the guitarist for the New York Dolls, a pioneering glam band. Johnny was soon introduced to heroin from Iggy Pop while partying with his girlfriend the famous groupie, Sable Starr. The Dolls were never accepted into the mainstread and soon burnt out. Johnny and Jerry Nolan, drummer for the Dolls, grabbed Richard Hell (ex-Television) and started the Heartbreakers, a rock and roll group. Hell left before they went on tour with the Sex Pistols on the Anarchy tour of 76. Thunders was now a father of two, Johnny Jr. and Vito and was developing a worse habit. His wife eventually left him in the early '80's around the same time that the Heartbreakers split. He never saw his boys again. Johnny wondered the Earth playing gigs and capitalizing on his "heroin-chic" appeal, mostly for another fix. When in Sweden in the late '80's, he met the mother of his first baby girl, Jaime. Jaime's mother left Johnny because of his irresponsibility and unpredicability. Johnny grew up in a home without a father and was endlessly guilty about becoming a bad father, but his heroin habit was incredibly out of control. Dee Dee Ramone says that he doesn't know how Thunders made it as long as he did. Johnny ventured into solo acoustic work in the end of his career and life while trying to stick with sobriety. The Smiths were quite simply the best band ever, in just the short time they were with us they changed the music scene forever. No-one can even come close to comparing to Morrissey's lyrics. The guy is a genius!
Also his solo career is still brilliant, some people say that he has declined but his songs are still better than anyone else's.......end of!

Common Misconception 1: They didnt start punk.
The First punk band, despite what some FOOLS say. Yes, folks, I am talking about certain people who think that punk started in the UK with artists who came after (but are still awesome) like the Sex Pistols or The Clash. True, some genres began to form punk like glitter rock, and artists that came just before them like Iggy and the Stooges, MC5, New York Dolls influenced them, but it's not like that was pure punk; it was developing punk, pre-punk if you like. The Ramones all liked the New York Dolls, and Joey Ramone was in a glitter rock band called Snyper before the Ramones even formed.

Common Misconception 2: They only knew 3 chords.
True, their songs were sometimes 3 chords, but not always. This doesn't mean they only 'knew' 3 chords; they were trying to strip rock back to its basics was the reason they formed. No, Johnny wasn't a bad player; check out his guitar technique! Totally revolutionary. But anyway, even if they did 'only know 3 chords', WHAT DOES THAT MATTER? The music is still good, the lyrics arent bad. It's not like they were D-U-M-B or something.

I am sick of everyone criticizing these legends! They were truly a great band with some awesome riffs and hooks. And I don't care that Dee Dee, Joey and Johnny are dead, I'm defending their music! So FUCK OFF haters!
