Sustainable Development: Engineering Genius Vijayaratnam thought about sustainable Water Resources Development and Management when he was a Project Engineer-Dam Construction in 1974 and surprised to find articulated lorries carrying timbers from near by forest unhindered and wondered if this practice of deforestation continue there would be no water to store and only silt from the watershed would fill the reservoir .This observation was brought to the attention of world water resources congress organisers via a paper on integrated river basin development with multi-dimensional objectives of social ,economic and environment protection in 1977.No wonder in some parts of asia , it was reported in 1994 ,hundreds of dams had to be abandoned due to silt built up in reservoirs made them useless.
