emo is basically a group of people who show their EMOtions in public. Despite popular beleif, they usually have a reason:
abuse
rape
heartbreak
and feeling trapped are common in my own friends.

ANOTHER type of emo is the music, although it doesn't sound good to most people, they are lyrics emos can relate to. because if you are very sad at the time,

"i HATE everything about you! WHY do i LOVE you?" (3 days grace)
sounds a hell of a lot better than
"there's a she-wolf in the closet" (shakira)
or even
"baby are you down, down, down, down down?" (jay sean)

its basically a point of view where most try to cheer themselves up, emos will try to forget when they were happy so when they're sad it doesn't seem so bad.
