Judo is a Japanese word meaning "gentle way," and is a type of martial art that comes from the ancient Japanese martial art of jujitsu, meaning "yielding way." In 1882, Dr. Jigoro Kano, president of Tokyo's University of Education, incorporated what he thought to be the best jujitsu techniques into what is now the sport of judo. Judo emphasizes using balance, leverage, and movement in all of its skills, especially throws. Practitioners of judo wear a cotton uniform called a judogi, meaning "judo uniform," and sometimes referred to simply as a gi. These uniforms are usually white but can also be blue. They consist of loose drawstring pants and a quilted jacket which is fastened by an obi, or belt. The uniforms were originally created for judo but are now used for many different types of martial arts. The most noticeable thing to someone watching judo would likely be the variety of powerful throwing techniques. Grappling techniques are also important to learn, and include various control holds, arm and joint locks, pins, and choking techniques. Safety is emphasized in practice, and judo places importance both on fighting done standing and on the ground. more...

Sambo was invented by the Soviets during the time just after the Revolution in Russia, and was seen as an example of the Socialist dream to reinvent traditional arts on a scientific model. Sambo is similar in many ways to Judo and Jujutsu, but is also said to incorporate traditional Russian wrestling techniques as well. The man generally credited with teaching and introducing Sambo in Russia was Vasili Oschepkov, who was also one of the first Russians to learn Judo. Oschepkov taught these techniques to Russian Special Forces and Commandos during the period between the two World Wars. The name “Sambo” derives from an acronym in Russian which means “combat without weapons.” These techniques were used by soldiers initially and gradually formed a sport sanctioned by the Soviet Union as beneficial to the people’s movement and a shining example of Socialist advances. The Soviets promoted the sport Sambo through Eastern Block sporting events in the manner that Judo was being practiced competitively internationally. After the disintegration of the Soviet Union, the sport retained its popularity and tournaments in Russia, and began to have more of an international influence, as its teachers were then able to freely travel and teach Sambo abroad. Sambo is one of only four forms of wrestling practiced in international competitions, the others being Freestyle Wrestling, Greco Roman Wrestling, and Judo. Sambo was also used by elite Soviet troops and KGB agents in the Cold War for hand to hand combat techniques. more...

A korean modern (ie last 200 years) martial art created for military combat.

Unfortunately the martial art has become so popular that it has suffered from a severe case of McDojos & huge increase of the sport version over the traditional art, 10 year old black-belts are far too common & the McDojos are everywhere. The sport version is split into two branches WTF & ITF where the latter allows boxing methods to be employed. Unfortunately the sport is nearly completely useless for self-defence due to its point-system emphasising high kicks over strategic attack, penalty on aggressiveness in combat & not allowing grappling/clinching which all other sport-arts allow on some level + in WTFs scenario restarts after contact. There is then the even worse branch ATA which is scam-artists at its best, ATA isn't recognised by the Koreans as a real branch of Taekwondo & ATA refuse to compete in ITF/WTF competitions alongside charging high prices for training. Traditional Taekwondo is like any other art, a complete system in all aspects with grappling/locks/takedowns & strikes + weapon combat. Unfortunately it is far & few between to come across, Taekwondo is a prime example of what can potentially happen when a martial art is turned into a sport, though this hasn't been the case for many sport-arts such as Judo which is a highly effective system adapted to many police forces. |

Better known simply by its initials (UFC) is as of right now the premier Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) organization in the world. It has slowly replaced boxing as the preferred combat sport in the United States (Boxing still remains more recognized worldwide). more...
The UFC has become a cultural phenomenon and has therefore become associated & attracted many undesirables. 1. UFC only fans are known as being very loud, stupid & opinionated. 2. The attire of choice is made out of highly ridiculous skull, bones & tribal designs. Some of the designs even resemble the eagle and iron cross as was used by the Nazi party. 3. Even though the UFC is the organization and Mixed Martial Arts is the sport the embodiment of Martial Arts is rarely seen or present as the major emphasis is on the entertainment aspect of things (Trash talk, nonsensical hyperboles, in your face attitudes & tired out catchphrases are the norm just as on professional wrestling). Mixed Martial Arts as it was in Japan with the PRIDE organization was more closely associated with glory, perseverance and the samurai spirit. The UFC has shown during its broadcasts to be more about the business, entertainment & marketing side of it. |

A great martial artist, but one who many chose to believe the myths about rather than the facts. Bruce Lee was a great martial artist but not the greatest of all time (or arguably even of his time), and his fight choreography wasn't very revolutionary if you compare to other films coming out of HK during that era. he was not a perfect being either he cheated on his wife, took steroids (before they were banned in any type of sport), and he smoked pot. Unlike many will tell you he didn't have many highly publicized fights, definitely none against Bolo (unless you count the one in ETD), but what famous Martial artists have? Many of his contemporaries in the film industry, many true marital artists themselves, note he had great speed and power. His style of Jeet Kune Do was revolutionary in that it mixed eastern and western training techniques. Another noteworthy accomplishment was his film Enter the Dragon along with the Shaw Brothers film King boxer (5 Fingers of Death) brought the Kung Fu craze to America. This may be why many hold him in such high regard he was the first Martial artist they saw on screen, and having lived in America for some years he was able to connect with western audiences easily. His legend was blown up exponentially by his wife Linda and daughter Shannon just so they could make extra money of the man after his death. But that doesn't change the fact he was one of the most influential martial artists of our time. more...
