Free Realms

Free Realms was a free-to-play kids MMORPG started in 2009 by Sony Online Entertainment. You had a customizable character in either human or pixie form that you could take on quests, enter battles, go fishing, farm, mine, adopt pets, build, craft, and explore the open world. Free Realms reached 10 million players in April 2010, where it peaked. Free Realms remained a popular kids game up until 2014, where the user-base began to dwindle and Sony closed its doors on the SOE; "sunsetting" multiple games such as Free Realms, Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, and Wizardry Online. SOE was then sold to a company called Daybreak Games.

Free Realms was unique in its existence as an entirely family-friendly MMORPG, one of the first of its kind. It was a safe space for children and teens to express their individuality, develop their creativity, make friends, and explore an open world setting without the intensity of an adult MMO. It's lighthearted, comedic, and magical tones were showcased through a rich storyline, witty writing, high-quality graphics, and endless opportunities for exploration.

The world of Free Realms had several locations including Sanctuary, Seaside, Snowhill, Blackspore, Briarwood, Lakeshore, Merry-Vale, Shrouded Glade, and Sunstone Valley. There were several annual events hosted by SOE such as the Super Spooktacular, Snow Days, Festival of Hearts, and Free Realms Birthday Bash in April.

Free Realms

A game where you can ALMOST do what you want, when you want. Yeah, you can choose what games to play, you can choose what jobs to level, but do you get to fly? Do you get to beat people up outside of duels? Do you get to shoot people with guns? Do you get to play as any animal? There are a lot more things you can't do, but if I said the rest, you would be reading this definition for hours.
N00b: O EHM GEE I LUV FREE RALMS JOO CAN DEW ANYTING!!!!!!!!

Experienced Player: Shut up n00b. The amount of things you can't do is over 9,000 in Free Realms.

Waffle realms

Amongst the caves of waffle

Lurking ogres devour waffle

In a gruesome sort of way

Above and beneath, piles of waffle

Winged ogres cook waffles

Before long you’ll love waffles too

And become a waffle merchant
