Rap is a music genre. Its hated by many people that believe in the stereo type that only blacks make rap and its always about shooting cops, drugs, money and sex. Which leads to another stereo type that says all blacks like rap...
1.Not all blacks like rap.
2.Rap's not only for Blacks.
3.Not all rap is about money drugs and sex...
4.Not all people who like rap are black
People who don't like rap, usually say
"Rap is crap that has artists like 50 Cent."
These are people who know nothing about rap, and judge it by what they see on TV.
If you REALLY know what rap is then you'd know 50 Cent sucks balls and isn't a good rapper at all.See the people who like rap, and actually understand rap know 50 Cent is not a good rapper.Rap is poetry, despite what any other person says. Rap is like poetry with attitude, poetry with a bit of gangsterism. Look at Mos Def. That is a real rapper. Somebody like 50 Cent or Cassidy has nothing on somebody like Mos Def.
Most people say that rap degrades women. I don't really think so, because people need to realize..
A bitch is a bitch.
A hoe is a hoe.
A whore is a whore.
And a lady is a lady.
Rap has something called a beat to it, something that sounds catchy and something you can dance to.For instance Tupac's California Love is something you can dance to. And anybody that tries to say thats not a good song...well isnt there a rock song that goes "I've got 2 tickets to paradise, pack your bags we'll leave tonight."
Some people say rap is senseless and doesnt talk about anything.
Wake up people thats what music is.
The ability to say express yourself, and it just so happens rap expresses itself more than others. And anybody who doesn't like rap, thats fine, but dont talk shit about it when you don't even know about it.
I've said enough above...

Shittiest excuse for "music" ever created. Nobody knows why people even listen to it. Played at "parties," especially at parties thrown by some of my older cousins because they think they're "cool".
Rap? More like... CUH-rap!

A form of popular music developed especially in African-American urban communities and characterized by spoken or chanted rhyming lyrics with a syncopated, repetitive rhythmic accompaniment.
A composition or performance of such music.
I like this music, it is "rappin`" !

Ok, this is my opinion, so if it offends you, stop reading. Rock is my favorite type of music. Hard, Classic, Metal, Punk, I like rock. I used to listen to rap, so don't say that I've only listened to 2 minutes of a song. Now, I think that rap is NOT crappy music with gangstas whining about poverty. There are good rappers like Eminem, 2pac, Jay-Z, you know. They had some bad songs, but they were good. Some bad rappers (IMO) are Nelly, Snoop Dogg, and 50-cent, that crap on MTV. Rappers ARE talented, it isn't easy to rhyme that fast still keeping rhythm and writing those songs. I'm sorry that all you rap fans have to suffer through these idiots insulting your music. BUT, a few of these guys started insulting rock. I just wanted to clear up a few things. People screaming at the top of their lungs and smashing guitars are not examples of rock. That's a stereotype too. I don't see why needing the whole band to play music is a bad thing when rappers just need themselves. And, when I say rock I mean good rock (again IMO). Bands like AC/DC, Led Zep, Guns N' Roses, Hendrix, and Aerosmith. Not bands like Slipknot (No offense to you people who enjoy listening to Slipknot). So, sorry for you rap fans out there, just wanted to clear some stuff up.
Guy1: rap sucks
Guy2: no it doesn't
GUy3: yeah well rock sucks too
Guy4: shut up

1.A weak attempt at music...or poetry...or something...Anyway, it consists of some guy bitchin and moaning about life while another guy makes a 1st grade level beat in the background
2.Absolute proof of the degeneration of our culture.
"Wow, is this depressing poetry or what?"
"No, it sucks too much. It some of that rap shit."

Ok, wow, I know alot of you people are defensive about rap, but you don't have to slam the rockers about it, because you are just contradicting yourselves! Rap is a form of music, and so is Rock, they both sound very different, but sometimes you can't distingish the difference in some songs! Seriously, the only thing that bothers me about rap is how some of the artists just put a "lil" before a name, made a few songs and became superstars! Alot of rockers have mad it easy by going with a fad as well, but i can't think of any right off hand. There are alot of different forms of rap and rock, like punk rock, grunge rock, gangsta rap, hip-hop! So no, not all rockers are hillbilly rednecks, so you guys can back off, and not all rappers are killer niggers with gats and hoes, so you guys can back off! Just remember, Racism can go BOTH ways!!
1st guy: Rap is GREAT
2nd guy: Rap sucks, Rock RULES!!!
1st guy: wutever, all you idiots do is complain about stupid shit!
2nd guys: and all yoe retards do is talk about gats and hoes!
then I show up!
Me: You're both stupid, acknowledge both forms of music and quit raggin on eachother just because you both have wacked opinions of something!!

After reading a lot of the definitions written here for rap, I've decided that most people are woefully misled as to the true nature of rap. It would appear that many of you have only heard commercial rap. That's alright, I'm not judging, I'm just here to inform. Anyways, these commercial rappers are not real rappers, rather an indictment of what rap/hip-hop has become in recent years. True rappers have a certain poetic flow and are probably more proficient in English than most people on here, but I digress. Real rap has deep and meaningful content and is basically poetry, only with more emotion- listen to Tupac, he has amazing sensory appeal in his songs. Contrary to popular belief, it takes a lot of skill to rap. If you listen to a real rap song, you will hear unprecedented control of the English language. A great example of this would be Nas or Busta Rhymes- they are true lyricists. Furthermore, many rappers, such as Nas, KRS-One, and Tupac, are actually very intelligent. This brings me to my final point. Yes, a lot of rappers do talk about the streets and drugs. This is because they are talking about what they had to overcome. Many rappers can actually be considered a rags to riches success story. Anyways, I think I've effectively communicated my argument (without using any kind of slurs or being insulting). To conclude, don't judge rap until you've listened to a couple of skilled rappers, otherwise you're just being hypocritical. Thank you.
If you want to listen to real rap, I have a few suggestions; Nas, Biggie, Tupac, Wu-Tang Clan, Non Phixion, Big L, KRS-One, Big Pun, Busta Rhymes, and many more.

A genre that nowadays integrates no singing ability, absolutely no musical talent, an ignorant tough-guy attitude, and a whole lot of strippers and such to make up for the above. It markets a "give me booty, beer, and a blunt" attitude to 12-16 year olds, and all sounds the same. Lyrical content always includes starting pointless "beefs" with other rappers, bitches and/or hoes, guns, drugs, "click", "grills", "my crew", shooting police, saying fuck, shit, or bitch every other word, etc. It's all-attitude and no substance. It's also the most popular genre in prisons. Whatever happened to Public Enemy, KRS-One, or any of that GOOD rap?
Lil' Jon, 50 Cent, and all that other crunk/"gangsta" rap bullshit. Music constitutes a Roland TR-808 doing the beat, a guitar riff or musical phrase stolen from another song (i.e. "Crazy Train", "Kashmir", etc.), some 9th-grade dropout putting "poetry" (with slurred speech and a loud, obnoxious voice) to a beat, and some dumb asses in the background shouting the last word in every verse (ripped off from punk music). Name-dropping your clothing line/record company at the end is a plus. Records are usually about 50% songs and 50% "skits" (i.e. Eminem).
