According to a 1950's slang dictionary the true root for the label "punk" was "a young male companion of a sodomite."
That boy in the red light district on the corner is nothing but a punk.

I would like to start this by saying that I wasnt alive in the seventies and I never got the chance to see the likes of The Pistols, The Clash or even The Ramones. This is simply my opinion.

I think that:

Punk is a loud, fast, often anti-establishment type of music. It was influenced by and has influenced many different types of music. It started in the seventies and was popularized by The Clash, Sex Pistols and the Ramones. Punk is not an image it is a belief and a lifestyle as well as a type of music.

Since the end of the seventies it has become impossible to truly define becuase it gave birth to so many different forms of music such as indie, goth, hardcore, emo, punk pop etc. Because of this a sort of "punk snobbery" has developed, were "true punks" look down upon others for not being around in that era.

Definately Punk: Sex Pistols, The Clash, Ramones

A little bit Punk: The Jam, Blondie, Green Day

Not Punk: Avril Lavine, Good Charlotte, Elliot Minor
Punk is not a fashion sense and it should not be an opportunity to look down on people because they are just beggining to get into Punk with "softer bands" like The Jam or Green Day.

a culture, a way of life, think for yourself.
Patric: "uhh, what should i do to be a punk?"
SickBoy: "you can start by having a mind of your own"
Patric: "they dont say that on Mtv"
SickBoy: "youre such a loser"

1)Punk is NOT:
Avril Lavigne, Hilary Duff, Hot Topic, Sum 41, Good Charlotte.
Punk IS:
An i-dont-give-a-flying-rats-ass attitude towards a lot of things. Having strong feelings against the government and politics in general. a bit of an anarchist

The punks that I'm friends with:
have strong opinions about politics and the government, are against any form of supression against them, are drunks, drug addicts, pretty tough, crazy, easy going, a bit narcisstic, ARE NOT RACIST HOMOPHOBIC ETC., and apathetic (don't care about much).
Dressing in plaid and leather jackets doesn't make you punk.
Sorry to burst yer little bubble...
Having a "i really don't give a shit, fuck you" attitude, being kind of anarchist, that's a bit closer...
Dressing in tight pants, boots, a leather jacket, and studs with a lovely multi-colored mohawk on top, doesn't make you "SO PUNK RAWK".
even if you wear Lacoste and Abercrombie and all that...
If you have the attitude, yer techincally a punk.

2) Loud, fast, and aggressive music.
examples of real PUNK music: Ramones, Iggy and the Stooges, The Dead Boys, A Global Threat, Aus-Rotten, Reagan Youth, The Virus, The Casualties, Crass...just to name a few.

Lyrics are usually about the government and politics and other topics to release anger...also sometimes humorous, rude, dirty, or morbid things (such as killing babies or raping mothers).
1) Person1: ew those are some nasty shoes.
"Punk": yeh i really don't care what you think. i like them a lot so go fuck yerself.

2) "I Want To Be A Facist Pig, Love To Fight, What A Thrill, We Don't Stop Until We Kill. I Want To Be A Facist Pig!"
"Don't respect something that has no respect
don't sympathize with something that has no sympathy
don't understand something that has no understanding
Don't give them their freedom, because they're not going to give you yours
Fuck nazi sympathy
Don't give them their freedom, because they're not going to give you yours"

Punk is a lifestyle.
A mental state.
The need to shake off all supression.
To be FREE.
Remember that word, Free.
It's listening to the Ramones in a basement with friends while smoking a blunt.
It's kicking over a sign and saying FUCK THAT.
It's defying the rules that you see to be unfit.
It's defying the system that you see to be stupid.
It's Punk.

A poser is that who will take this definition.
Go out, and do exactly what was written.
"A guy walks up to me and asks 'What's Punk?'. So I kick over a garbage can and say 'That's punk!'. So he kicks over the garbage can and says 'That's Punk?', and I say 'No that's trendy!"

someone younger than you, usually used by old people.
Get away from my car you punk.

In MTV's eyes, punk is any band with low self esteam that breaks curfew to look cool.

A real punk doesn't give a shit about relationships, he'd just slap the bitch.

BTW Punks naturally have black around their eyes from binge drinking. Good Charlotte just uses it for makeup to look "cool"
MTV: She broke my heart, im cry for three hours!!
