Punk is not deifinitive. Its music, and whatever itmeans to a induvidial person.
Often a movement from the Punk Rock music, often a fast 3 chord style inspired of early rock n roll. However also element of ska and other genres is often seen. De definition punk came up in the late 70's but the music has ben alround probaly for decays, but the name was given after the English music magazine "punk" wich featured bands as patty smith and the sex pistols. Many bands such as Cock sparer (UK formed 1974) and the Ramones (usa formed 1974) is today considered punk. Gary bushel, English music journalist named certain punk bands "Oi!" (Cockney slang, means "Hey!" "hi!" or "hello!") However today the the punk, and most of all the SKinhead movement has taken this word and made it a aprt of their way of life. However it would be a matter of opinions wich band is a punk band and wich is an Oi! band. There has always ben political opinion invovled in punk lyrics, but not a certain parti political line. Many punk lyrics ex:
Ramones, I'm against it:
"I dont' like politics, I don't like communists, I don't like games and fun, I dont like anyone! And im against it!"
Cock sparrer, watch your back:
"We don't wanna be part of a new religion, we don't wanna be fooled with a swizz balde knife, We don't wanna be part of a political dream, just wanna get on living out life"
However other bands like Crass has clearly a string left ving political moment.
A band like the Exploited and the sex pistols, has posed with nazi symbols, but their lyrics are in no way right or particually left ving. It seems like a provocation against exstremists, both left and right and the casual person.
Both extreme left ving and extreme right ving punk bands have ben seen, but has not becomed a generel considered typical role model for people interested in the punk scene
Punk is not a fashion, its a way of life
punk is not a style, it is not wearing as many braclets as you can fit on your arm or spiking your hair. It is not about dressing in stripes or in Torn-up clothes or even how many times you've rammed a needle inside yourself. It is the way you live and breathe your life.
sex pistols and ramones are punk rock. that stupid emo crap you hear...AFI for instance would NOT be punk......so quit complaining about punk rock music being for fags until you learn what it is!
1. A prison bitch.
2. A punk rocker: someone who is into upbeat somewhat rebellious music
1. You're such a punk!
2. I like: punk, metal, etc.
Before the "punk" music scene took over, punk was only known as a male prostitute, or a male who participates in sodemy.
Look at that punk over there walking into that gay bar!
A late 20th century phenomenum. The greatest, most earth-shaking popular culture since rock'n'roll. Musically, an natural evolution of folk/protest music. For the people, by the people, an accessable documentaion of modern times. Genuine eccentricity for the modern age, lampooning all trends before it and sticking two fingers up to a confused and plastic world.
The Bus Station Loonies.
Punk is punk is punk is punk.
There is no authority but yourself.
Do anything you wanna do.
Being punk isn't about trying to be different just to be different. It's not about wearing the coolest looking studded belt, it's not about dying your hair cause your parents don't want you to. It's not about being a bad ass and trying to impress anyone. It's not about being able to tell someone to "fuck off". It is about being able to be who you are and standing up for what you believe in. It's about being an individual.
&&Im the real -punk- deal, mother fucker.
I would like to start this by saying that I wasnt alive in the seventies and I never got the chance to see the likes of The Pistols, The Clash or even The Ramones. This is simply my opinion.
I think that:
Punk is a loud, fast, often anti-establishment type of music. It was influenced by and has influenced many different types of music. It started in the seventies and was popularized by The Clash, Sex Pistols and the Ramones. Punk is not an image it is a belief and a lifestyle as well as a type of music.
Since the end of the seventies it has become impossible to truly define becuase it gave birth to so many different forms of music such as indie, goth, hardcore, emo, punk pop etc. Because of this a sort of "punk snobbery" has developed, were "true punks" look down upon others for not being around in that era.
Definately Punk: Sex Pistols, The Clash, Ramones
A little bit Punk: The Jam, Blondie, Green Day
Not Punk: Avril Lavine, Good Charlotte, Elliot Minor
Punk is not a fashion sense and it should not be an opportunity to look down on people because they are just beggining to get into Punk with "softer bands" like The Jam or Green Day.
One thing that Punk obviously is not would be unified. Or having the same belief. Punk is perfectly acceptable for drop out age kids through early or mid twenties. After that it's like " ok lady your scaring us". "Fuck the Government, fuck what people say,I am my own person". " hey I'm punk, maybe broke live with mom but I'm movin out next month because she is ating like a bitch and I'm going to be fourty next week".
Old man on death bed..... "Hey kids keep punk alive ok, and don't ever let any one tell you what to do" "Tell us more ole wise one" "OK, fuck what any body thinks and always think about yourself only defend these things and oh yes never I mean never listen to what antbody else has to say remember you are the most important person in the world. Fuck family fuck( coughing up blood)every thing
