Ferdinand Magellan set out from Spain in 1519 on the first voyage to circumnavigate the globe with five ships and a complement of 264 crew. Three years later in 1522, only the one ship, the Victoria, returned to Spain with 18 men.

The Philippines were the death of Magellan. The expedition sighted the island of Samar on March 16, 1521. Magellan was welcomed by two Rajas, Kolambu and Siagu. He named the islands the Archipelago of San Lazaro, erected a cross and claimed the lands for Spain. The friendly Rajas took Magellan to Cebu to meet Raja Humabon. Humabon and 800 Cebuanos were baptized as Christians. Magellan agreed to help Raja Humabon put down Lapu-Lapu, a rebellious datu on the nearby island of Mactan. In a battle between Spanish soldiers and Lapu-Lapu's warriors, Magellan was killed on April 27, 1521.

Disputes over women caused relations between Raja Humabon and the remaining Spaniards to deteriorate. The Cebuanos killed 27 Spaniards in a skirmish and the Spaniards, deciding to resume their explorations, departed Cebu.

For all its losses, the voyage was a huge financial success. The Victoria's 26 ton cargo of cloves sold for 41,000 ducats. This returned the 20,000 ducats the venture had cost plus a 105 percent profit. Four more expeditions followed between 1525 and 1542. The commander of the fourth expedition, Ruy Lopez de Villalobos, named the islands after Philip, heir to the Spanish throne (r. Philip II 1556-1598).

i'm reaching the point in my life where i've realized that establishments are not passive things that just let you go on your way. The recent drug busts, uniform crackdown, and the announcement today which implied explicitly that the administrators posses a blacklist, along with the possibly embellished record of theft, have led me to recognize that cathedral catholic highschool is not a catholic-christian community, but a sort of oligarchal facism.

I. Complaints against and Interpretation of School Policies
I for one, do not think i am getting the education my parents spend their hard earned money each year on, and i believe it is either time for me, and all of us to choose. Either I will keep on passively attending a school that wants to change everything about me, conform me until they can eventually stick biased ideas into their graduates who will then unknowingly apply these ideas for the rest of their lives. this is called brainwashing. the school touts catholic social justice, and will expel anyone who has an abortion, but our uniforms are controlled by ONE single store, which manufactures its products in El Salvador. The one redeeming quality is that they give steady jobs to many salvadorans, even though much of el salvador is controlled by violent gangs and corrupt ...

Edina is well known for being the wealthiest suburb in the State of Minnesota and is home to many top Doctors, Lawyers, Sports Owners, Altheletes, and the Wealthy. Edina is split into two sides due to highway 100 running through it north to south. The west side is known as the place to live (more expensive property) while the East side is home to the better shopping such as the uber-chic 50th and France, Southdale, and the ultra expensive Galleria.
Edina also Homes one of the best Public schools in the USA, which not only trumps others in acedemics but also has the most athletic Titles in the Nation. Even though Edina has such a great school system, the top bracket families send their children to the surronding private schools such as (ranking from high to low in cost per yr): All boys Militaty school St. Thomas Academy ($16,000), All Girls The Convent of the Visitation ($15,000), Brech School ($15,000), Academy of Holy angels ($10,000), and Benilde St. Margrets ($9,000).
There are 4 prominate churches (along with a few smaller ones) in Edina: PCP (prespytrian), St. Patricks (Catholic), St. Stevens (Epicopanlian) and Our Lady of Grace (Roman Catholic). The wealthiest families attend OLG as it is often referred to by outsiders are "our Lady of Diamonds" and "Our lady of Mink". St. Patricks and our Lady of Grace are Sister parishes but are most commonly know for their rivaltry
