|
1. A Germanic peoples that likely originated as a minor ethnic group in Scandinavia and grew as they spread across Europe roughly two thousand years ago. Upon settling in areas around the Black Sea, they encountered the Roman Empire, and in the fourth century AD, sacked the city, putting the nail in the coffin for the mighty empire, and that was the end of that.

2. Short for 'gothic,' a musical and stylistic movement that came off the punk scene in the late 1970s with such bands as Bauhaus and Siouxsie and the Banshees. Popularity has waxed and waned since but the movement has remained intact to this day. Probably one of the most visually distinct subcultures around, characterized by a preference for dark clothing that is often influenced by Victorian, medieval and BDSM ascetics, among other things, and/or make-up, a pale complexion and some pretty interesting footwear. Since events like Columbine that sparked a witch hunt, goth culture has been accused of corrupting minors with Satanism, vampirism and violence. In truth, a great number of goths are actually intelligent, articulate and conscious people who, despite the foreboding appearance, are for the most part, more stimulating to be around than any of the varieties of chickenshit conformist that dominate the world today. 3. An angsty, angry suburban teenager who needs a great way to rebel against his or her unfair parents. What better way than with a Marilyn Manson t-shirt, a terrible black hair dye job and... |

An alternative to the world, or the capitol? A paradox, a Utopia, a Distopia. Hate, Love. It is not simple. No one can and ever will understand it. Everything you think about LA is false. No matter who you are. I will live there forever, because it is where all the questions are. Other than that.. It is the second largest urban area in America. located in the southwest corner of the U.S. Bad: Its public transportation system has poor ridership compared to other American cities (NYC, Chicago), it lacks a singular defining center, it has poor air quality when compared to many other american cities, it has poor water supplies for its population, ethnic segregation similar to other American cities, and worst of all.. It has made itself famous through the culture industry and simultaneously propogated the myth of Los Angeles as a unidimensional place when in fact that is the only thing Los Angeles is not. Good: Hands down, the undisputed most diverse conglomeration of people, cultures, ethnicities, subcultures, interest groups, etc. in the entire world. Beautiful weather and diverse ecology (mountains, beaches, wetlands, forests, deserts) A unique history that dates back to its founding in 1781. Incredibly diverse Architecture and historic sites. Downtown Los Angeles contains the largest contiguous collection of pre-1930s buildings in America. It also has the most Beaux-Arts (late 1800s) o... |

okay, I usually want to make my definitions pretty unbiased (if that's even a word). In the case of the word scene, though, I do not feel like I am being biased when I define it the way I do because I feel like being scene is, overall, a pretty negative thing. Anyway...

Scenester: A person who is scene, obviously. The basic goal of a scenester is to be non-conformist, and in order to do that, they conform to the scene style. In other words, they are a complete and utter poser. Typical scene style and behavior consists of: -short, choppy, black hair (this is a must for males and females), often with a stripe or chunk of an unnatural color or bleach. -band shirts, generally emo bands -skinny jeans for girls, girls jeans for guys -Converses or Vans -bright colors paired with black -polka dots -dinosaurs, robots, or other kiddyish fantasy-type ideas -girly ribbons for girls -Myspace account, with tons of pouty pictures at weird angles -typing (and often talking) with weird phrases, like HARDXCORE, KTHNXBAI, and others The number one trick to being scene, though, is to deny that you are scene, ... |

|
The red trech coat and fedora hat clad femme fatale and infamous leader of V.I.L.E. (Villains International League of Evil) is A.C.M.E.'s most wanted criminal in the popular multi-media series "Where is Carmen Sandiego?" The series was first owned by "Broaderbound Software" and now a franchise bought out by "The Learning Company". It's creators were ex-Disney artists who were sick of one dimensional female characters they believed made poor role models, and created there own female "Indiana Jones". Carmen is described as a "thorn in ACME's foot" as she is the ring leader for the largest criminal organization on earth; famous for stealing priceless artifacts and historical landmarks. She is extremely gifted intellectually. In recent Carmen games such as "Stolen Drums" it is noted in the game manual that she was a child prodigy and won a substantial amount of money on a game show and used it to travel the world. In the T.V. series "Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego" it is discovered during the "Into the Maelstrom" episodes that Carmen was an orphan who joined ACME when she was only 16 years old under the wing of the original "chief" shown in some of the games and the PBS TV Gameshow series played by Lynne Thigpen. ( Thigpen's phenomenal success in her short lifespan as an actress in the early 90's lead to powerful independant successful black women recieving the slang term "THE CHIEF" by fans of the show as a nickname/title because at the time of the shows popularity it was ... more...
