Pretty much the opposite of Mainstream music. Rarely, if ever, gets on the radio or top 40, and it's not usually well known to the general public. Also known as "Underground Music". Non-mainstream music includes bands/artists such as Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, Dälek, etc.

| 2. | non-mainstream | ||
|
the opposite of mainstream. usually not the 'trend' and usually not what everybody else is doing. original and individual. can usually be identified as something original and/or something that will probably never become popular, but awesome nevertheless. mainstream : conformists :: non-mainstream : individuals.
SOMETIMES alternative/emo/indie music. other music, such as pop punk, can be mistaken as non-mainstream. |

| 3. | Mainstream | ||
|
Those who are normally hooked to whatever society says is popular, or cool. If you think about it really, there is a mainstream of non-mainstream kids. What the non-mainstream kids say you have to be in order to be non-mainstream. I listen Green Day. I listen to epo-555. Mainstream can be good if ignorant fucks would stop conforming and hating everything that's on mtv. Who gives a fuck?

| 4. | mainstream | ||
|
In the opinion of morons, such as almost everyone posting on this page, mainstream is the epitomy of conformity and capitalistic exploitation tactics. To follow mainstream, in the opinion of such idiots, is to be weak and conformist.
Mainstream is marketable and appealling to the masses because it's popular and more likeable. Most "non-mainstream" artists would do anything to become mainstream. Mainstream is frowned at by morons between the ages 14-24 due to their inability to see the wood through the trees.

| 5. | mainstream | ||
|
A person (or more commonly persons) which follow the common/accepted/most seemingly popular trend. The trends are normally labeled, causing a divide of those who conform and do not conform (non-conformists) until the non-conformists become the common trend, creating a cycle.
Today's common mainstream trends are labeled as 'emo' (Many of these titles are misused). The older term for the jumping of trends is 'Fashionista or Fashionister'

| 6. | Anti - Mainstream | ||
|
Someone who is anti - mainstream has a strong dislike of trendy things and people. Many subcultures have preached about being anti - mainstream, most notably punk and heavy metal. Death metal, Black metal, and a few lesser known subgenres of punk rock remain the longest standing anti - mainstream subcultures while others have either become popular (I.e punk) or merged into other more popular subcultures(I.e classic metal and thrash metal). While music subcultures have the biggest anti - mainstream message other subcultures based around religion (I.e LaVeyan Satanism), politics(i.e non partisans), and even literature have emerged. Most trendy things start out anti - mainstream and become popular usually after a slight change in image (I.e in the 1920's united states when white people began playing jazz it became acceptable). Punk was the first major anti - mainstream subculture, shortly followed by heavy metal and hip - hop.

| 7. | Athlan | ||
|
Someone whose name contains only letters from their last name. Someone with a "non-mainstream" name. Sometimes confused as a made up name, not given by parents, but in reality it appears that parents were just trying to be clever. Athlan Lathan is like Brian Nibra or Justin Nujsti
The name Athlan is the anti, Bob, Bill, Steve, Brian, etc. |
