| 995. | UK Hardcore | ||
Hardcore is a genre of music that originated in the UK in the early 80's. Hardcore events, known as Raves took place in fields, houses, clubs and warehouses throughout the UK. The police and government discouraged Raves due the large drug and alcohol consumption although could not control the spread of the phenomenon. Unfortunately for the Government and the police their attempt to squash the Hardcore scene failed, resulting in high-ticket prices for venues being rented especially for Raves. It is believed that over 40% of Rave ticket prices are a direct tax form the government, although this has not discouraged true and loyal Raves. This is evident in recent Raves that are often sold out within a few weeks of tickets being available.

As most modern Americans use the term, a pimp refers to a renaissance man who oozes competence, who is successful and flourishing, highly capable in a broad array of domains, a skilled dancer to hip-hop, disco, and 80s pop, and able to move effortlessly in many social circles.
Actually, pimp can also denote a woman of similar stature. It is a gender-neutral term. Angie aced her exams, got into medical school, and won the triathlon last weekend. She is such a pimp.

The same year, they managed to sign a deal with Warner Bros. Records after various failed attempts. After signing the deal, they released their first album in 2000, "Hybrid Theory". It became an instant success and launched LP into mainstream. Some songs that became popular in the album were: "Crawling" and "In the End". Came 2002, after a long time touring around the US, they worked on a new album, and finally released it, under the name "Meteora". Although less successful than the first album, it still managed to sell a lot and make the band's popularity grow even more. Some songs that stood out were: "Faint", "Numb", "Somewhere I Belong" and "Breaking the Habit". After the second album's success, Linkin Park continued to tour and help in charity work. It kept going like this until 2006, where the band released their 3rd and newest album, "Minutes to Midnight", That marked a departure from the band's old rap/rock style. | 999. | Ginker | ||
While the past entries have shed more than an accurate light on the central, Jersey archetype that was Ginker, few have paid much attention to the current status of the semi-retired people who once roamed so freely. In recent months, while compiling information for an upcoming documentary, ("Ginkers"), I have found that indeed, many still exist. Although many of the once famous Ginker lairs have become strip malls, (Movie City 5) and the Brunswick Square Mall no longer houses an arcade, the lingering cigarette smoke and barely visible tire tracks have led us to some interesting discoveries. Though a scattered bunch, most Ginkers are still un-reformed. Of the representative sample we have interviewed, several are employed in the auto industry, doing well and still adhering to the Ginker culture. Two of the male Ginkers still owned and wore Iron Maiden tees, black denim, and even had the landscaper length hair that was epitome of Ginker rebellion in the middle 1980s. Of the females we found, many recalled with fervor the "Gate" behind East Brunswick High, and the "Path" on the way to Hammarskjold JHS. In addition, while still shunned by society, all of the Ginkers we interviewed were both highly successful and happy that their unique breed has endured. Being the younger brother of a Ginker, I remember Friday nights at the Brunswick Sq. Mall and the sight of the Ginker Pack, a fearsome circle housing several men with leather vests, chain wallets, and rock tees, drinking Orange Julius and nodding defiantly to one another.

| 1000. | Banksy | ||
A sell out. Somebody who comprimises their integrity, morality and principles for money. It is commonly associated with attempts to increase mass appeal or acceptability to mainstream society. A person who does this, as opposed to following the original path they laid out for themself, suffers immediate loss of respect. The term comes from the prime example; Banksy, the UK based graffiti artist who writes of anti-consumerism and then goes on to make himself one of the most commercially successful brand names in the art world. Dave: "Hey Kev, you still into Green Day?"
Kev: "Hell no Dave, after their American Idiot Album they've gone a bit Banksy" Dave: "True" |
