| 29. | Upstate New York | ||
|
The use of this term varies by region. - NYC + LI: North of the Tappan Zee Bridge.* - Westchester: North of Westchester. - Lower Hudson Valley (Rockland, Putnam, etc.): North of Poughkeepsie. - Albany: North of Albany * Some people from these areas consider anything North of the Bronx to be upstate. However, (for NYC) they probably have never left their borough, or (for LI) they're jealous because Westchester is essentially a superior version of Nassau County. All that aside, the technical definition of Upstate New York, as defined by the New York State Department of Tourism, is anything North of southern Dutchess County. Person from Jericho: "914? So you're from Upstate?"
Person from Scarsdale: "Seriously? I'm closer to Manhattan than you are. Everyone knows that Upstate New York begins above Westchester." Person from Poughkeepsie: "Hey, I'm not upstate. The Metro-North still reaches me, so that makes me part of the metro area." Person from Albany: "This is the real upstate." Person from Buffalo: "I live in Western New York." Person from Binghamton: "Westchester, is that on Long Island?" Person from Buffalo: "Chicken Wings." |

| 31. | Six | ||
|
V. To refuse to call something by its new name, the classic example being Sixth Avenue in Manhattan, which people refuse to call Avenue of the Americas even though the name change occurred over 60 years ago. Often the "sixing" is a matter of principle, where a perfectly good name is changed for politically correct, corporate, or other inane reasons. "Sixing" long after the name change has occurred is known as "deep six." 1) The RFK Bridge? Six that! Triboro for life.
2) Person 1: You still callin' it Idlewild? They changed it to JFK in 1963! Me: The deep six remains in effect, after all a man is nothing without his principles. |

| 32. | B&T | ||
|
Bath & Tennis, as in the Southampton or Palm Beach Bath & Tennis Club - a snooty and sarcastic interpretation of the usual B&T abbreviation for an individual who is considered Bridge & Tunnel. The sarcasm lies in the fact that the individual in question clearly is not a member of a bath & tennis club. Comment: "Wow look at that guido, he is definitely B&T."
Sarcastic Response: "Yeah, he was my doubles partner in Southampton last weekend, he's got a mean backhand." |

| 33. | Brooklyphobe | ||
|
A Brooklyphobe is someone with an aversion to visiting the New York City borough of Brooklyn. Brooklyphobes either fail to recognize or look with an air of smug superiority toward Brooklyn's rich cultural life. A Brooklyphobe may even harbor feelings of genuine fear with regard to the specter of visiting New York City's most populous borough, a fear often born of erroneous, racist and antiquated notions of the pre-gentrification "inner city" harking back to the 1970s, 80s and early 90s. Such Brooklyphobes are often, though not always, tourists hailing from beyond New York City itself. Some Brooklyphobes may occasionally frequent bars, music venues or other social gatherings in Williamsburg or Park Slope. However, a true Brooklyphobe will do even this only infrequently and with great trepidation, and will invariably take a cab home to Manhattan at the conclusion of their outing. That party was full of taxi-riding Brooklyphobes. Shit was whack.
