| 1. | Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds | ||
|
Captain of the Firefly Class Transport ship "Serenity" in the show "Firefly", that was cancelled after one season, mainly because the people at Fox don't recognise Joss Whedon's Genius.
Mal is a hard but fair captain and generally looks after all his crew, he's got a strange sense of humour but it totally awesome. Played by actor Nathan Fillion, who is also totally boss. Mal fought in the battle of Serenity Valley at the end of the war between the Browncoats and the Alliance. Unfortunately the Alliance won, but the Browncoats seem to form alot of the underground smuggling network within the show. Mal is very loyal to his crew and his ideals, he won't betray someone. Mal: Kaylee! What happened to the Engine room? Were there monkeys? Some terrible space monkeys maybe got loose? ... Mal: You want to stab me in the back? Next time do it to my face. Written by Joss Whedon and performed by Sonny Rhodes, it is also known as the Theme to Firefly. Firefly was a woefully short-lived series on the Fox television station. It was a sci-fi western and the opening theme conveyed the main hero and protagonist of the show; a hardened war veteran named Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds. The song has been covered by a band called The Henry Kaiser Band and can be heard in the closing title music of Firefly's movie adaption, Serenity. The theme is also used as the chorus to filk band Escape Key in their Firefly tribute entitled Mal's Song. Lyrics for The Ballad of Serenity.
Take my love, take my land Take me where I cannot stand I don't care, I'm still free You can't take the sky from me Take me out to the black Tell them I ain't coming back Burn the land and boil the sea You can't take the sky from me There's no place I can be Since I've found Serenity But you can't take the sky from me |

| 3. | Captain Tight Pants | ||
|
AKA Captain Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds of the vessel Serenity. Known for being particularly dour, with a harsh sense of humour. Although he finds it difficult to open up, it's obvious that he's a good guy beneath it all. Portrayed by Nathan Fillion on the now-cancelled sci-fi show Firefly which lasted just one season on FOX from 2002 to 2003. The nickname was first coined by the character Kaylee in the episode "Shindig".
An affectionate word used by Firefly fans to refer to the character of Mal, and (more rarely) the actor Fillion with reference to the show. Example 1 -
Mal: Just be careful. We cheated Badger out of good money to buy that frippery, and you're supposed to make me look respectable. Kaylee: Yes, sir, Captain Tight Pants Example 2 - Fan: There was a rumour that Captain Tight Pants himself would turn up at that convention last week! |
