A large island in extreme southeastern New York state. Although the NYC boroughs of Queens and Brooklyn are in fact geographically part of the island, when one speaks of "Long Island", they are generally only referring to Nassau and Suffolk counties.
Most of the area was undeveloped or farmland until the 20th century. The end of WW II saw the development of many towns and mass migration from NYC. The vast majority of the citizens are middle class homeowners, though there are a few pockets of poverty here and there. There are also some exceptionally wealthy areas as some of the richest people in America own homes on Long Island. Most of these areas are on the North Shore, the fabled "Gold Coast" of legend and lore...that Fitzgerald romantacized in The Great Gatsby.
Most of the southern half of the island is flat, but as one moves north of the Long Island Expressway, the terrain becomes more undulating and hilly, though the highest spot is only 401 feet above sea level near Huntington Station.
The climate features cool, wet springs, very warm summers, mild autumns that often last well into November, and moderately cold winters. One can generally expect several snowstorms of greater than four inches from December through March and blizzard conditions do set in from time to time.
From an aesthetic perspective, many undeveloped areas do feature scenic beauty, though suburban sprawl seems to be ever encroaching upon them...

The best place to live in the world. Yes, I will admit there are some snobby rich people and from my town probably 25% of the population is rich and snobby. But if you're saying that we are terrible because we live here and think we're better than everyone. Total lie. You don't see us running around in New Jersey telling everyone how great we are...and furthermore we are not bad people because we live here...I was born and raised in a preppy town on the North Shore and I am proud...next time you want to go accusing Long Islanders, come talk to us, we're really not that terrible. Yes, there are always the drunk teenagers running around, and if you go down a main road at about 2 in the morning your bound to see about 30 15-18 year olds just going insane. But thats how it is here I'm sure we're not the only place in the world that does that. Life in Long Island is awesome... If you're trying to "diss" us well than you are just jealous that you don't drive a Jeep Wrangler, or BMW, or GMC Yukon, or Range Rover, out to a summer house in the Hamptons where you go to parties and have an awesome time. I don't have anything against any other part of the world or country, but coming from a person who lives in Long Island, I hope you get your facts right next time.
Long Island is the place to be.

in southern New York State, along with New York City. Nassau and Suffolk make up psuedo-long island, which techincally not part of the city. But most of nassau and western suffolk have the same culture and same or close "new york minute" feeling(rush hour for example). After all most of the skilled workforse for the city comes from the island, and its the money those people bring home that keeps long islands economy strong.

Most of long island is suburbs, from the town of brookhaven in suffolk to the queens border. Some of the areas are more urban than others, and some completely urban(spots in nassau, for example). Ask anyone, either they or their parents have lived in the city at one point in recent history; people move to get into more suburban atomosphere and to be closer to the beaches.

And to clear the "New Yorker" term up. "New Yorker" comes from "NEW YORK City" not New York State, so it refers to people in the city. Since Long Island is so closely connected with teh city, both culturly and geographically (brooklyn and queens are on long island), Long Islanders are also called New Yorkers (except for the east enders who stay in their shells and never go west). While out of staters can call people from upstate New Yorkers, its because they dont know the area well. Upstate is completely different than downstate, its more like pennsylvania, and doesnt embrase the "New York" atmosphere.

An island located east of NYC, with amazing beaches and some of the best people you'll ever meet. You can play the 6 degrees of separation game and you will find a connection to 9 out of the 10 people you'll meet from Long Island. Yes, sometimes we slip into our customary "Lawnguyland" accents, but the fact of the matter is they happen as a result of the people you grow up with, not necessarily where you're from. In fact, most people love our accents, and if you don't, don't listen to us talk when we go into a rant.
You either hate it or you love it, but there sure as hell isn't a place like this anywhere else.
You can't spell L-I-F-E without L.I. <3
Long Island girls do it better.
You either date a rich girl from the North Shore, or a chill girl from the South Shore.
Long Island is love.

Most expensive, cold(figuratively), and unfriendly place on Earth. I mean if you're walking around VERY RARELY anyone says "Hello" or "Hi" to you. If you try to say hello people cry "sexual harassment." Driving here especially in the summer near the Hamptons, expect to get into an accident because people drive like they had 30 cups of coffee, plus a hit of crack. Finally houses here are really expensive, a piece of shit 4 room shack would cost you $500,000+. So if you're looking for a nice inexpensive place with friendly people to live, stay the fuck away from Long Island, or New York for that matter, try the rest of the United States or even the world.
In my 17 3/4 years on Long Island, I always wanted to get the fuck outta here, or kill myself, or both.
