29. indie (adj.)
Having to do with the culture and lifestyle surrounding the independent music scene. The genre grew out of Sonic Youth's alternative rock movement of the 80's which spawned bands like Nirvana. When alternative rock, ironically, went mainstream and began getting playtime on commercial FM radio stations, the music left under the radar became known as "indie." Some notable indie bands of the 1990's were Built To Spill and Neutral Milk Hotel. Currently, indie music is becoming more popular. Bands like Modest Mouse and Death Cab for Cutie are signing with major record labels. Many are appearing on late night television talk shows (e.g. Rilo Kiley, The Walkmen). Some view this as a good thing, that perhaps the general public will finally start listening to some good music. Others, wanting to retain their exclusive status, are listening to more obscure bands to counteract this trend. Many indie people claim to prefer vinyl.
FM radio listener: I think I like this indie music. The Killers are where it's at!
Indie kid: The Killers released their debut album on Island Records, asshole.

Indie kid: Have you heard of Suburban Lifeboat or The Juicy Chalkboards?
FM radio listener: What the fuck is wrong with you?
note: the band names mentioned in the above example are made up and are meant to demonstrate the strange and sometimes silly titles of indie bands

30. the shins
An amazing indie band. Best band of all time. A great band that became too popular because of Garden State! They currently live in Portland. Albums include "Oh, Inverted World" and "Chutes Too Narrow." (Both are great!)
Me: I love The Shins!
Random 1: Who are they?
Random 2: Oh, I heard them on Garden State!
Me: Fuck.
31. indie
Indie is just another trend, like anything else. Its the bastard child of emo. How to be indie - read pitchfork every single day, pretend to be into many genres of music, talk about bands as convoluded as you possible can, constantly try and find some obscure peice of music that nobody else has, say that its not as good as thier old stuff about every new album by any band that has a previous release, conform to the artistic nuancues within - its a bit like dada, read existentialist literature, wear blazers scarves, tight pants, "cool" artsy tshirts, pretend like you are not just part of another group by claiming complete originality, live in a slummy apartment, be "spontaneous" and "random", make shitty electronic music with your laptop and synthesizer, drink vitamin water all the time, smoke cigarettes, be super choosy about friends and pretend like indie people are the only "real" people, dont forget, you are totally original!
Lamer 1:Hey, did you get the new autechre?

Lamer 2:uuuuh - yeah! its not as good as thier old stuff.

Lamer 1:fuck you there isnt a new autechre - youre not indie anymore

Lamer 2:omg i wanna die nobody likes me! - i wish there was a place that could tell me how to be hippest all the time!

33. brand new
brand new is/was always classified in more of the indie scene and unlike EMO, jesse lacey actually writes about real life experience and doesnt complain about his mistakes or those very experiences.there sound is quite similiar to that of the smiths. jesse lacey is the deepest most profound song writer out there and i admire him for his guts and making it thru tuff sergeries and relationships JESSE LACEY IS MY HERO the best thing for brand new is to stay low key because no one wants them getting popular, so emo crowds can pretend to be "profound", instead of depressed and insane.
brand new fan: i love this song "play crack the sky"
emo kid: oo whats that can i hear?
bnf: FUCK NO BITCH GO LISTEN TO HAWTHORNE HEIGHTS AND CUT URSELF!
emo kid: **wimpers** ...maybe ill do that.
34. indie
listen, "indie" is not a genre of music. It means independent music - think like the bohemian lifestyle. There is no such thing as indie music versus rap music or whatever the fuck you want to compare it to. It represents an era, not one certain type of music. get is right.
Be indie in everything you do.
35. indie
as a mindset, a movement that revolves around choosing music, clothing and general culture based on their individual benefits and 'pros' so to speak; also could be incarnated in one who isnt overly pretentious because of someone else's opinions. Not to be confused with indie yuppies who are typically malinformed rich white kids, elitist about their tastes whilst not quite having the intellect to back up their own opinions.
typical indie attitude towards daily happenings:

I like the shins based on the atmosphere that their songs give, and the way in which they alter my mood, not just because i saw them on garden state.

This brand isn't particualrly 'cool' but i like this shirt so i will buy it and not fuck around because someone else doesnt
