Someone who enjoys really hoppy beers, or drinks hoppy beers exclusively. Most likely this person is a beer-geek or craft-brew drinker.
Hops are what give beer the Citrusy, Piney, or sometimes what bring out the Herbal or Fruity flavors.
Man, that Stone Ruination IPA turned me into a true Hop-head.
A drug user or addict. Hophead is an umbrella term for users of everything from cocaine to marijuana (or 'tea' - which is a jazz era term, not one that originated with the Beats as is erroneously noted elsewhere @ the Urban Dictionary) to benzedrine (aka 'bennies'/amphetamine). The term sprang from the early jazz scene in 1920's/30's America.
Decades later, beer aficionados appropriated the term to refer to themselves (with a wry tip of the hat to it's original meaning).
Mezz Mezzrow, an early marijuana dealer, smoked his own product and was himself a hophead.
A lover of all beers hoppy. A hophead espouses the merits of India Pale Ales, Russian Imperial Stouts, and other highly hopped beers. A hophead may even chew fresh hops in an attempt to quench his insatiable desire for hops. A hophead would sooner suffer castration than drink the typical BMC (Bud /Miller/Coors) swill.
<Beer Drinker #1> Wow, I just tried Three Floyds' Dreadnaught Imperial IPA. It's a hop orgasm in a bottle.
<Beer Drinker #2> You, sir, are a hophead.
Beer drinker who heavily prefers hop-dominated brews. Typically drinks IPAs or double IPAs. Because of this, rarely drinks Macro beers. The term itself (rather than the charachteristic) is almost certainly a progeny of the rise of micro- (now called craft-) brewing.
"That dude ONLY drinks IPAs; sneers at everything else; major hop head"
One who habitually uses "hop" or opium. Also hop-habit: opium addiction.
"Lemme tell you 'bout Willie the Weeper,
Willie the Weeper, yeah, the chimney sweeper
He had the hop-habit and he had it bad
Lemme tell you 'bout a dream he had"
--old ragtime song about opium.
n. A person who loves the flavor of hops, specifically in brewing.
There are several beers titled "Hophead" including an English bitter by Dark Star Brewing, and a red ale by Green Flash Brewing. There is also a HopHead Brewery. Hophead.com is a website about beer and brewing.
IPAs (India Pale Ale) or Double IPAs are examples of beer styles that are favored by hopheads.
noun; A now-extinct term formerly used in the 1920's to 1950's, referring to a user of illicit drugs such as goof balls or muggles (marijuana). The term is used in the movie "Reefer Madness"
Boy: "These are my new friends, Dad".
Dad: "I want all those damned hop heads off the place, NOW!"
