Someone who is enraged by evidence of another's success and as a result has to try to one up the successful person or simply put the successful person down. Hating is much more than just being jealous of the person who has done well. The hater would find much satisfaction in seeing some form of misfortune come to that person.

Haters may also simply find satisfaction in someone else’s misfortune. When a friend falls off a bicycle and lands in the sewer for instance, it is a normal reaction to laugh at the situation. However, a hater will respond slightly differently by laughing at the person in a ridiculing manner.

Haters have a special link to one another and they tend to fuel each others hate by hating in groups. It may be a form of stress relief or something entirely different but they do seem to become happy from the escalation of hate for a person that arises in these groups.

Haters generally tend to hate people who are doing well even more so - racists excluded - if they are closer or more similar to them or of a similar social class.

When Jesus talked about prophets not being welcome in their own home town, he was probably talking about the haters.

There is one African tribe that used to be famous for hating its best hunters. A great hunter would make the biggest catch in months for instance, and then everybody would put him down by telling him that they couldn’t believe that he could expect them to eat something so puny and unhealthy looking.

However, hating is by no means limited to Africa. Hating exists all around the world. Among travellers for instance, Anglo-saxons from the UK, US and Australia are famous for hating, especially when a non anglo-saxon is doing well. This reputation is likely the result of a handful of haters that make a bad name for every Anglo-saxon, and even citizens of these nations who are not even anglo-saxon.
Sally: "Wow, China and India have been doing really well and a lot of jobs have been relocated due to the super-cheap labour. Are you worried about your job?"
Brian (hater in denial): "We’re in the only country that has quality management skills. Those guys are not smart enough. There’s no way that my job could ever be done by someone outside."

Shawn: "Damn, Kev’s been doing real good these days working his new job. He just got a new car and he paid cash. He’s looking for a house now too."
Wilma (hater): "I don’t believe it. That Kevin is not making that money from a new job. That fool be dealin’."

Peter (hater who is racist but probably doesn’t think so): "No way, mate. Ain’t no way, that this coloured fella goes to Oxford. How many black people go there, like 10? What are the chances?"

An overused word used by someone to describe another person that expresses a different opinion other than that of their own. This term is generally used by someone who can not intellectually respond to someone having a different opinion than that of their own and is thrown out as a last ditch effort to discredit the persons argument.
PERSON 1: You mean didn't vote for Barack Obama?!

PERSON 2: No, I did not. In my opinion, I believe his politics are little too far left for me to feel comfortable voting for him. I'm sure he's a decent enough guy personally, but can't see him as my President.

PERSON 1: You're just a hater.

A premeditated or spontaneous act of an individual or group thereof, who endeavors to keeps another individual (usually African American) from achieving his or her full potential in their chosen field of excellence. The act usually takes a blasphemous or ridiculing verbal form but holds the potential to escalate into a physical altercation; i.e. fisticuffs or cap busting. The propagation and proliferation of such hate has become a pandemic in African American culture. Said hate can apply to all facets of the game; i.e. ones chosen mode of transportation, one’s ability to engage in intercourse (with hoes and/or bitches), ones financial resources, or ones felonious enterprises. Haters frequently resort to such colloquialisms in order to further degrade the moral of the hatee. Constituents of the hater nation usually travel in numbers, in order to exponentially compound such distaste.
Tyrone, upon hearing of Malik’s repeated reception of felatious acts by the sensuously shaped Shaniqua, exhibited his characteristic qualities of a hater by entering into a tirade detailing Malik’s inadequacies of his reproductive organs.

A term used to deflect criticism and erect a mental dissonance that allows one to ignore further criticism in continued delusion of one's own competence, skill or talent.
In addressing someone's inability to sing in tune.

Person 1: You're not good a good singer.
Person 2: Nah, I want to believe that I'm good. Therefore, you're just a jealous hater and you're opinion is worthless.

A label that some people apply to anyone who disagrees with them on any subject. Such name calling is designed to discourage critical and independent thinking, and prevent full inspection of bogus ideas and beliefs. Use of the term hater is rampant on the internet.
The commenter that just wouldn't accept my presentation of the cold hard fact that the US government was behind the attacks on the World Trade Center towers was just a hater.

A word typically used by people in the "Ghetto" describing a person that likes to see another fail or unhappy for another to succeed. As of late, the word is now an over-used word, used by your typical liberal/conservative young, suburban soccer mom or dad.
Becky: Like OMG I learned a new word from that rapper.... Umm... what's his name? 25 cents, I think.

Tanner: Oh that is so totally rad Becky!!! What's the new word?

Becky: Hater... I think is so friggin AWESOME. I think I'm going to use it in every sentence I use.

Tanner: Me 2 Becky!!!!!!!! Let's go frolic in the park and be haters together.

1. One who suffers from a mental illness wherein he/she is frequently compelled to offer destructive criticism to/of others, as a consequence of one or more personal insecurities.

(Note: Contrary to popular belief, the insecurity prompting a type 1 hater is not necessarily 'jealousy', as the other often has nothing that the hater covets. Instead, the hater is prompted by conscious or unconscious, real or imagined perception of some deficiency within the self and/or life. The cause is mental imperfection of the subject/hater, little to do with the object/hated.)

2. One who assesses another with the conscious intent of degradation, such that the assessment is unfair, inaccurate and/or uncalled for.

(Note: Unlike the type 1 hater above, the type 2 hater is aware that their judgments are negatively skewed. Such a hater will make a conscious decision to be untruthful in order to degrade another. The motivation behind instances of a type 2 hater varies on a case by case basis. Note also that this is not a compulsive state of being like the type 1 hater, so someone may be a type 2 hater only in a given circumstance.)

3. One who takes pleasure in the act of criticizing another. Synonyms: a**hole, d**k, b***h

(Note: The nature of and reason for the criticism -- e.g. accurate, requested, constructive, etc. -- is irrelevant for the type 3 hater. The distinguishing factor is that the mere act of other-directed criticism suffices for positive valence (e.g. enjoyment).)
Hater: Oh, is that your new boo? *scowl*
Other: Yea, I love her.
Hater: She's aight but she can't dress. I could never date a girl who would walk out the house lookin like that. That's why I don't mess with any of these broads around here.
Other: Fuckin hater.
