1. When milder and milder expressions or actions are construed as hateful, bigoted, racist, anti-gay, etc.
2. When smaller and smaller disagreements with a party line are construed as hateful.
Michael: We were supposed to judge people by the content of their character. Now, if I don't vote for Obama *because* of his character, I'll be seen as a racist no matter what. Thanks, hatecreep!

2004:

Tina: I don't support gay marriage because I'm a Christian and I think marriage is between one man and one woman.
Carly: I don't agree with you, but you've a right to say what you think.

2012:

Tina: I don't support gay marriage because I'm a Christian and I think marriage is between one man and one woman.
Carly: OMG Tina WTF is wrong with you?! Bigot! Gay kids are jumping off bridges RIGHT NOW because of awful people like you! I hope your son is gay so you know what it feels like! *Bursts into tears*
