i will agree with non-goths in that most goths are very evasive when it comes to defining the term "goth." i will also agree with them in that "goths" who simply whine and make fun of non-"goths" are pricks. most "goths" don't really know what it means to be goth.
the gothic period (late 1700s-1800s) was a period of the "sublime." rather than look for skin deep beauty in something, the gothics would look for intellectual or moral value. for example, they would prefer a battered old castle staircase to a sparkling new marble staircase because the old one has more character.
the TRUE goths of today are named this way because they follow this thought pattern of looking for the thought-provoking instead of the aesthetic. why revel in the darker side of life? "sinister" things (i.e., death, fate) provide more food for thought than pretty things (i.e., blue skies, love).
thinking in this rather morbid way usually results in the true goth being rather satirical. SOMETIMES they may be withdrawn and maybe a little snide, but this is because knowledge is a burden.
the pseudo-goth (the one everyone thinks of when they hear "goth"; bear in mind, i do NOT consider these people goth) is some middle school douche who shops at hot topic and listens to music in the gothic genre (i.e., bauhaus) whether or not they actually like the music. they are quick to judge people and make fun of them every chance they get.
then theres the TRUE goth (like me). we think in the manner of the people of the aforementioned gothic period. some of us are "artsy" simply because we can express our knowledge so freely in it. we don't *neccessarily* shop at hot topic (though they have some cool shirts) and we don't *neccessarily* listen to goth music/death metal (i like pink floyd & queen). we are intellectuals.
most of us are pretty nice. many goths are outcasts in some perspective, so they are often receptive to people who need a friend.
real goth (like me): ...style doesn't make a goth; your thought process is most important
Goths are not defined as someone who slashes their own wrists or sets fires to schools, that is what is called a masochist, vandal or sadist. A Goth, in modern society, is merely a lifestyle.
Although their image and demeanor consistently appears cold and reclusive, this is but a shell and Goths are more commonly found to be nicer than the 'average' stranger, due to their tendency to have intellectual/educated backgrounds, and artistic divulgences including the visual arts and musical talents.
A 'pure' Goth epitomizes beauty not in the way that you would say "wowzers she is A BEAUTY", but in the way that the ideal Goth strives for clear skin and pure complexion; the dark hair and garb serves to enhance the fair complexion of pure skin.
People carrying "Gothic" qualities does not relate whatsoever to their personality and/or attitudes towards other people, rather, their attitudes towards the many forms of art, community, and individuality.
As you can probably tell by now, I myself am a Goth. And a Christian (strange combination you say? *shrugs*). I don't cut myself, I don't swear, I don't think offensively of other people of all shapes and sizes (and colours et cetera) but I strive to be Me in a world where everyone and everything is just a copy of a copy of a copy..
There is freedom of speech, there is freedom of personality, and a natural Goth embraces the freedom of image.
...Are victims of streotypical assumptions
Do not worship Satan
Are not depressed
Are quite happy
Can have friends
Don't always listen to Gothic music
Dress how they want to dress, not always in black
Don't sit around complaining about not having friends, they don't want friends, a real Goth is happy being a social misfit
Often don't want to be referred to as a Goth
POSER GOTHS (Sometimes known as emo)
Will call themselves goth, note they don't use a capital letter to start the word
Pretend to worship Satan, although its rare that they actually believe in Him
Will act depressed all the time, no matter what he/she is really feeling
Will dress in clothes purely from Hot Topic, Planet 13, Starsnstripes and places like that
One Band Wonders, think that they're so Goth coz they listen to a band that is sometimes labelled as Gothic, such as Slipknot, where as in actual fact Slipknot are nu/death metal
Dress only in black, pure attention seekers
Goth: ....okay..like I would care what you think
Poser Goth: You make me sick! You're not even wearing black! And you call yourself a goth!
Goth: I never called myself a Goth, that was a label invented by people like you, real people don't need labels
Many types of goth. Examples:
Loves plastic, nightclubs and the future. Loves (gasp!) bright colors and usually has plastic hair.
Often Satanic. Sucks blood from partner and has sex in coffins.
Very elegant. Wears lots of velvet and lace. Aims for Medieval/Victorian look. Loves vampires and poetry.
Listens to Marilyn Manson. Wears only black. Is a right saddo.
Goth music: Bauhaus, The Cure, Switchblade Synphony, etc. MARILYN MANSON AND LINKIN PARK ARE NOT GOTH MUSIC.
Remember, GOTH is just a label made up by a bunch of losers to call the darker ones.. Real 'goths' do not label themselves. A self-proclaimed goth = big poser. Gothic stereotype = morbid, suicidal and black-clad. Not always true. You could dress like PARIS HILTON and still be part of the 'goth' scene.
