Originally used by rapper NaS in 1994 to mean a young man, new to the game of street-life, "shorty" came from "short" + "y", as young people are usually shorter than rappers. As the word devolved in meaning, coming to mean girlfriend or attractive concubine, it also devolved in pronunciation and spelling, eventually coming "shawty." |
