emo
Okay, so there are two very different definitions for the label 'emo'.

First version (usually used by non-emos): Emos are attention seekers who live regular lives like every other teenager in Britain but cannot handle the strain as well as everyone else. They say that they are individuals, yet listen to ‘emo music’, hang out in ‘emo groups’ and buy ‘emo clothes’ with their pocket money. They hang out in dark rooms generally ignoring the happy things in life and talk about how depressed they are all the time. Most lie about cutting themselves in order for people to feel sorry for them without actually experiencing any pain at all. Others do it as an ‘initiation’ ceremony in order to become fully emo. ‘Cutting’ is a fad – what on earth does it help? You feel sad, so you cut yourself to make you feel… better? They don’t appreciate what they have, and do not realise how bad other peoples' lives are in comparison to their own. Emo is just an ever-increasingly popular ‘group’ which people want to be part of. It is a group for kids without an identity, looking for a bit of melodrama and ‘deeper levels of understanding’. To be honest, the kids who REALLY have a life not worth living aren’t even in the emo club – they just try to get through each day until it gets better.

Second version (usually used by TRUE emos – i.e. those who actually have a reason to be depressed): Kids who have had the misfortune to go through circumstances which are incredibly depressing. For example, parental divorce, death of a loved one, and loneliness. They listen to music which explains how they feel, enjoy hanging around with people who understand how they feel, and buy clothes that express to the world about how they feel. Only some kids cut themselves. Cutting can become addictive, and it distracts from the inner pain. It can be hard when youre labelled in the street because of what you wear, and can sometimes make depression worse. Being a ‘half-emo’ can also mean that you just like black and emo clothes and haircuts, and enjoy gigs and mosh pits. Some people that you like because theyre genuinely nice people, could be emo, and fun to hang around with.

Nearly every single teenager has wanted some form of attention or feeling of belonging at some time or other, and being emo could be the solution to some. Don’t hate people because of what they are labelled. Get to know them – they may be more like you than you think.
Person: 'Hey dude, look over there, some damn emos with their black hoodies and weird hair... jeez man theyre such attention seekers'
Friend: 'Err... you own a black hoodie, and all they've done is grown their hair long, man.'
Person:'Umm... oh be quiet, fool'

Cheerleader:'Oh my god, that girl is like, SOO weird - she is like, always DEPRESSED and shit!'
Friend:'Weren't you crying on the phone to me the other night because your boyfriend dumped you? You seemed pretty depressed then...'
Cheerleader:'Oh shuttup'

Emo
Emo is genre of hardcore punk music started in the mid eighties by a band called Rites Of Spring. Their lead singer had been a big fan of the band Minor Threat, and after their breakup, had decided to start his own band. It was similar in the musical sense, however the lyrics were different. Instead of spitting about politics and anti-capitalist themes, the lyrics were more personal, and hateful towards themselves. This new music managed to drive away many old punk fans, and attract many new ones.
The DC emo scene exploded and became excessively popular amongst the underground. However, it fizzled out almost as fast as it had begun.
In the early 90's, two new bands, Sunny Day Real Estate and Jawbreaker, started the new wave of emo music. SDRE started the "post indie emo" genre. Bands that can be categorized under this genre could be Texas Is The Reason, Taking Back Sunday, Mineral and other music following those lines, that are often confused for emo.
Jawbreaker were the new wave of emo revival, although still remotley underground, the music continues to be popular with the people who can search it out.
Thanks to MTV, the perception of what real emo is has been completely changed and most people do not understand what it is, automatically assuming that DASHBOARD CONFESSIONAL or anyone else with an acoustic singing about breakup is emo. Emo isn't pussy music, it's heartfelt, and hardcore at the same time. An angry emotional release of self loathing and self depreciation.
The style of music that band played was pretty similar to the emo stuff that Rites did.

emo
A group of kids who happen to like the same type of music as is 'in' at the moment. It is possible that they liked these bands before many others heard of them, and will continue to like them after the phase has passed. Ditto clothes. They have only been labelled 'emo' since the word came into popular culture, and is not one they would give themselves. They do not all self- harm (there is a difference between 'emo' and 'manic depressive') and do not all wear thick- rimmed glasses or wear all black.
Poser: What you listening to?
'Emo' Kid: *names band not many have heard of*
Poser: Who?
Two months later, the band have made it big and everyone knows them.
Poser: OMG, I love this band!
'Emo' Kid: You didn't know them two months ago.
The band become 'uncool' to be fans of.
Poser: You STILL listening to them?
'Emo' Kid: Yeah. So?

Emo
When a kid, whose life is relatively good, acts like he hates himself for attention. Some of these little bitches cut themselves because they want someone to talk to them about their problems, but then they act like they don't know what you're talking about. Emos are so caught up in their little pathetic act that they think that their being different from everyone, when in reality they are joining an even bigger phenomenon. Can be identified by a shit load of eyeliner, black clothing, black nail polish, and listening to shitty music. Emos are becoming to the 2000s what grunge was to the 90s, and what hair bands were to the 80s.
My friend just became an emo, he used to be such a happy person but, ever since he started listening to My Chemical Romance, all he does is cut himself.

Emo
An oversused clique.
the word "emo" is around because society made it.
today everything is "emo"...
we get called emo if we like the color black, or wear converse and skinny jeans. We get called emo if we arnt happy 24/7. we get called emo for having hair in front of our eyes. we get called emo for wearing eyeliner. the list can go on..
it is thrown around like no other lable.
most people are too ignorant to know that emo is just a genre of music.
we are all guilty of using the emo clique.
even those of us who bitch about it.

emo
Once apon a time the term 'emo' was actually used in context. Meaning a genre of music, linked to underground bands and sometimes known as a sub-genre of punk, rock or screamo. Now the word 'emo' is often used as a stereoype, which is insulting to one if not self proclaimed. Emo is now also seen as someone who is 'depressed' or self mutilates themselves, or someone who wears black. When infact they are just a normal person who dresses differently, doesn't like the whole gangta scene, and would rather listen to worth while bands than listening to 50cent all day round.
1. REAL menaing- "I saw this band playing emo last night, at that underground rave".
2. stupid person insulting someone they call 'emo': "God, your so emo."
apparent 'emo': Why?
stupid person: Coz, you listen to MCR, HIM, and Hawthorne Hieghts, not to mention your wear too much black and are individual".
Apparent emo (indivdual kewl person): "Whatever, I'm going to go have a life."
