An individual who self-mutilates by laceration, as described in other entries. Although there are exceedingly rare examples of legitimate cutters, a vast majority (Johnson and Williams 2005, et al.) are simply attention seekers who will inflict very minor injury on themselves in imitation of more serious self-mutilation (Ibid.). In recent years, as media coverage and general societal awareness increase, self-mutilation has become more common than in the past, due much in part to "copycat crimes" wherein people imitate the mutilatory actions they've observed. Although it can be signs of a serious mental illness, one must take caution before assuming that self-mutilation is in itself a signifier of mental disturbance.
Some mutilators (or cutters) have a serious mental illness; others simply don't.

a cutter is someone who has alot of shit that goes wrong in their life...and they cut their selves...to relieve the stress and pain they have gone through...people that just do it for attention...and just 2 get people to feel bad for them...need help...because there is other ways of getting attention...not by just cutting...also cutting is almost like an addiction...almost like being anorexic or bulimic...it is really hard once you start to cut yourself...to just not do it any more...
whats that scar from?

the jerk who jumps to the front of the line while everybody waits. they have many tactics, including the infamous "walk up and talk to a friend, then suddenly become part of the line". they are despised by many, but confronted by few.
guy 1 (after waiting five minutes) - look at that guy, he's innocently talking to his buddy at the front of the line
guy 2 - he's not talking to his friends, he's taking cuts! he's a cutter!

okay first of all, no one knows what a cutting is until they're experienced it. its a way to release stress. you can pretty much refer to it as "the only pain you can control" cutters don't like to made of.
someone might say,
"oh we made of you because we figured you'd stop"
thats a lie.
how the fuck do you even think that?
i dont know.

but seriously,
"emo people" are just like everyone else.
so don't judge them.

even the popular people can be cutters,
they seem so happy on the outside,
but on the inside they could be depressed.

so if you're one to judge shut the fuck up.
oh my god did you hear danielles a cutter?
AGAIN JUDGERS SHUT THE FUCK UP

From the movie "Breaking Away" (1979), about a teenager named Dave who loves bike racing and dreams about racing the Italians someday.

In the movie the term is used by college students to describe other teenagers who do not attend the college--or any schooling, for that matter.
Mike: They're gonna keep callin' us "cutters." To them, it's just a dirty word. To me, it's just somethin' else I never got a chance to be.

A person who intentionally harms his or her self.
This term is not limited to those who cut themselves, but is also often used to sum up any self-mutilator. Many cutters use various other forms of self-mutilation, such as burning themselves, stabbing themselves with needles, biting, etc...
In GENERAL, but not all inclusively, cutters tend to be female, and teenage to young adult. It is common for a cutter to have been molested as a child, or to be dealing with other sexual inner-torment, but this is definitely not always the case. Any sort of torment can inspire one to cut.
Some cutters cut to focus the emotional pain to the physical, some for the adrenaline rush, and some do it just to feel. Some people become emotionally numb to reality and use cutting as a way to reconnect.
Some cutters bleed, some don't. Some cutters HAVE TO bleed. Some cutters get to the point where cutting in itself is not enough, but they must see the blood, must feel it pouring out.
Cutting does not mean a person is suicidal, but it is common to use cutting as an ALTERNATIVE to suicide. A cutter might be tempted to commit suicide, and usually has issues with depression, but maybe realizes suicide is not a good option. But they have to do SOMETHING; so they cut.
But sadly, oftentimes cutting loses its thrill, and suicide is the only step left. Or the cutting gets deeper-- more blood, more cuts, more pain...
If you think you know somebody is a cutter, don't judge them. And even above that, DON'T ASK QUESTIONS about it. They're ashamed---
I used to cut. When I did it, or rather, WHILE I was doing it, it was everything I needed. Such a relief-- but then when I'd wake up the next morning, I'd see my arms, all scabbed and scarred, and think, "What have I DONE to myself?!" I tried to hide it. The winter was easy, wearing long sleaves every day, but then people began to notice...

Cutting is, I'd say always, NEVER for attention. On the contrary... It's often a habit for someone who just needs something to redirect their OWN attention.

a cutter is a slang term for someone who for whatever reason self-harms. this is in NO WAY to be confused with the recent teeny-bopper craze of being emo where children dress in black and bright colours and claim to be "misunderstood" and cut because MCR have sung about it. i am being generic ofcourse, im sure some emo children have problems.

the reson behind this cutting, can stem from anything from stress, to full blown clinical depression, and often is caused by some traumatic event in the person life. whatever the cause or the reason it is equally serious. cutting is a form of relife, whether to take your anger out on yourself or because you feel worthless and are unhappy with your life, or even just because you are so frustrated you don't know what else you can do. it is a coping strategy, it is therefore almost the opposite to suicide where a person is giving up on life, cutting is perseverence.

cutters are often branded attention seekers. THIS IS NOT THE CASE. i can say from my own personal experience, when you bear the scars of cutting, the last thing you want is anyone to pay attention to them. i spent some of the hottest days of summer in long sleeves until i almost passed out, was forced to remove my jumper and had school friends commenting on my cuts, from then on i preceeded to cut on my stomache.

the best thing you can do to help someone you think might be cutting is to avoid talking about their cuts but constantly reassure them that you care about them and offer them a shoulder to cry on. but don't feel you have to share their burden.
how a cutter feels (based on personal memories): i have a mountain of coursework due in on monday and my parents are in the middle of a divorce and i have no self confidence causing me to be paranoid about what people are saying about me and i am disgusted with my apperance - the pressure and emotion of all of this is building up in my chest i can feel it physically hurting, its hard to breath - wheres my razor? - there, run it over my skin a few times, it cuts like a knife through butter - relife, i can breath again.
