A cult is an organisation that has a set of beliefs in which the cult is viewed as being the one true organization, everyone else is wrong.

Usually they promote some kind of religious belief - usually made up by themself - but not always, some cults can be athiest, such as Amway.

Usually members have black-and-white thinking, and see their organization as being infaliable.

Members of a cult can be known as followers.

Followers will obay the cult leaders instructions and believe the propaganda without needing to verify it with much proof.

They are usually superstitious.

Cult members can be of average intelligence.

When people wonder about how a cult works, they usually focus on what the leader is doing. Usually the leader is just a charasmatic con-artist.

The real mechanics of how a cult works can be understood by focusing on the psychology of the follower.
The cult had over 1,000,000 members, each of whom, believed that the leader knew the secret of power, and by following him, and by buying all of his products, they too, would understand the secret.

Cult B had 1,000 members, and members believed they were with the right way because so many around them were following the crazy ideas, and the leader seemed so powerful.

Non-Denominational Christians that only talk about God and force their views upon others- will often pressure you to come to church, discussion groups, etc.

Linda: All that Molly ever does is go to church groups.

Sara: That's because its a cult.

A social group that operates within the larger culture and practices different norms, behaviors, beliefs, heritage, attitude, actions, and live a different and separate lifestyle from the norm. Cults are usually involved in denying that they are a cult. Cults are groups who practice disinformation and usually have outsiders accusing the cult of both being a cult and conspiracies. The easiest way to spot a cult is if people are making conspiracy claims and calling the group a cult while the cult practices disinformation and denying the conspiracy claims.
Freemasonry and Scientology are two cults that practice secret rituals and covert harassment, attacks, and other criminal activity that they then use their cult members inside public offices to cover-up, misinform, and protect the cult.

Basically any religion that's different from yours.
Christianity, for example, can be seen by Hindus as a cult.

An organization which deceives stupid and insecure people (usually middle-aged loners who've never had a boyfriend/girlfriend) by promising them importance or power if they dedicate their meaningless lives to serving them (ex. promising their members eternal salvation).

In reality, cults only care about making money or gaining political power for their leaders, and have no remorse about exploiting and intimidating their members in the process. Cults are basically like evil corporations, only much, much eviler and dangerous.

To understand the psychology of a cult member, first:

1. Picture some uneducated, unmarried middle-aged loser who works 50 hours a week at Wal-Mart for 8 bucks an hour, and tells everyone how much he loves his job and how nice his bosses are, and is willing to rat you out if he hears you say anything negative about your job. Creepy right?

2. Now, picture a person who is the equivalent of the guy above, but does the same work for FREE, or worse yet, even PAYS out of his OWN POCKET for the "privilege" of doing work for his organization (aka his cult).

This is the psychology of a cult member - they are literally the lowest common denominator of society. Essentially, they are the "teacher's pet" kid who annoyed the hell out of everyone in 3rd grade, and never outgrew this psychology even in adulthood. Avoid cult members at all costs, they are at best, delusional, and at worst, downright sociopaths.
900 members of the Jim Jones cult killed themselves and their children at his request - can you imagine any sane person doing that?
