| 1. | godfather's choice | ||
The offer of a career opportunity that can't be refused. Usually in the context of being pushed out of one's current position. While the opportunity has superficial attractiveness, it requires an immense sacrifice if accepted. If not accepted, the alternative is career harikiri. I was given the godfather's choice - stay in New York as the CFO and be ostracized by my boss & my peers. Or I take the job as the CEO in Palookaville, without my family for a year.

| 2. | Career Purgatory | ||
When you're stuck in a loser job with no opportunity for advancement or a raise and the job is not your idea of what you want to do for a career. Man, I graduated from college 10 years ago and am STILL in grad school. Maybe in another 2 years I'll finally have a career, but for now I just need to pay the bills. Career purgatory is so depressing!

| 4. | mockortunity | ||
A fake opportunity usually used by a supervisor as a means to get you to do something extra with minimal chance of any real benefit. My boss told me that she had a terrific opportunity for me that would enhance my career. After she told me about it though, it sounded more like a mockortunity to me.

| 6. | linkedin explosion | ||
When one goes from being a "job seeker" on linkedin to being employed and wanting to show off to all your friends/colleagues through inviting them into your network. Having minimal information on your profile and "in search of new career opportunity" to having a gratuitous amount of pages of text on a job you haven't even started yet. Joe just had a linkedin explosion? Suddenly he thinks he's hot shit after landing that gig at BMW, he's adding everyone left and right bro.
Did you hear? Jill recently went from struggling liberal arts graduate to retail at Saks. She had a linkedin explosion and added our entire graduating class to brag about it through status updates. |
