To background obsess is to obsess over something or someone while still carrying on with your daily life. You continue to fulfill your daily tasks and obligations without a noticeable decrease in mindfulness or attentiveness, but the object of your obsession is never far from your mind, and you often find yourself thinking about it/them without consciously having meant to. She's going to be background obsessing about that job interview until she hears back from them.
