A derogatory term used for describing someone new to the goth lifestyle; usually confused about what it is. The term can be interchanged with poseur. A baby bat is typically someone, from the age of 13-19, attempting to become part of goth culture. Led by the misconceptions of mainstream media and the public in general, a baby bat will assume goth is something it isn't. Only a few baby bats will come to pierce the superficiality and evolve into true gothdom.
Man, look all the baby bats at this MCR concert!
Quiet! I'm sure they'll cut themselves if we tell them they're not goth!
Nooby to the goth culture. Usually identifyable by overdone clown makeup, Marilyn Manson/Slipknot/Korn tee shirts, and token Wiccanism.
Is that a Goth?
Not yet, she's just a baby-bat.
A baby bat is a person who has discovered Goth, but is unfamiliar with the scene. They often listen to Goth music, and have distinctive 'Goth' tastes (an interest in the occult, macabre acadaemia, a love for the Victorian/Georgian societies) but haven't yet become acclimatised to being non-mainstream.
Baby bats are distinctive from emos in both personality and dress sense. Though the bats often use heavy make-up, they wear more tartan and netting/tulle than emos and are more stereotypically Goth. It takes a keen eye to distinguish some emos from baby bats, but there is one difference:
Baby bats grow up into Goths. Emos grow out of the fad, and into accountants.
a) "Check that emo!" "That's not an emo, that's a baby-bat." "How can you tell?" "She's got a Bauhaus patch. No emo listens to Bauhaus."
A young goth
; less frequently a relative newcomer to the scene. Sometimes perjorative if used by older goths.
There's always a load of babybats and moshers hanging around outside.
A goth that is new to the goth scene. Babybats are 16 or under, and might not know a lot about the whole subculture just yet, or have enough money for a decent wardrobe. However, these babybats are in no sense wannabes, and have traits that a lot of adult goths have. If you saw some kid with a ghostly white face, a Marilyn Manson shirt, and pants that came from Hot Topic, they would be a poser. Not a babybat.
Person #1: Oh gosh, look at that guy. He is such a babybat!
Person #2: Nah, he's just a poser.
A person that is new to the Gothic scene and is unfamiliar with the Gothic culture.
In her caked on white clown make-up and Hot Topic dress, it was obvious that Jennifer was a baby-bat.
1. A newcomer in the goth scene.
guy1: "Look at her! Isn't she something?"
guy2: "Sure but...she's a babybat."
2. A young goth.
younggoth: "I wish I were older so people wouldn't keep calling me 'babybat.'"
3. A rarely used affectionate term.
person1: "See you later, babybat!"
person2: "Awwwww, bye!"
