Another term for a hooker or prostitute, esp. a "high-class" one who does not necessarily want their true career known. Often used for groups of hookers or prostitutes.

Origin: During the American Civil War, groups of women would often follow regiments of soldiers, thus acting like groupies. One regiment, which was under the command of Joseph Hooker, was followed by a particularly unsavory band of women.

The term "hooker" also comes from the name of the general.
