look up any word, like bootylicious:
1. Alternative Rock
Alternative Rock is a genre of rock 'n roll that was developed during the 80's, but became popular in the 90's. Early Alt-Rock artists include the Pixies and the Violent Femmes, as well as early proto-Grunge artists like the Melvins and Green River. Alternative Rock did no make much commercial success until Nirvana's release of Nevermind, which not only broke out in the Grunge movement with Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Hole, but also the Indie-Alternative scene for acts like Oasis, Dinosaur Jr, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Green Day, Rage Against the Machine, and the White Stripes, Radiohead, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Coldplay (from the Britpop, Indie, LA, Garage rock, and Art Rock movements respectively). Today, because of the death of Grunge, Indie-Alternative and Pop music have fought over the airwaves for the New Millenium, with the rise of Boy Bands and Pop Princesses, to the Indie-Pop acts of Franz Ferdinand and Hive. More recently, 'Powerpop' and Pop-Punk acts like All American Rejects, Fall Out Boy, and new Green Day have been at the forefront of Pop music, while groups like Kings of Leon, the Foo Fighters, and Modest Mouse have stood on the side of Art Rock, Modern Rock, and Indie Rock, all subgenres of Alternative.
Nirvana was grunge, Modest Mouse is indie, and Oasis is Britpop, but all are Alternative Rock. Much of Alt-Rock has been influenced by the Punk music of the late 70's, but not all Alternative rock falls under Punk Music, nor does much Punk fall under Alternative.
2. Nu-Rock
A genre of rock bands that are different from being metal or being just an ordinary rock group. Another word for it would be alt rock.
Nu-Rock
Breaking Benjamin
Evenascene
RA
Chevelle
Authority Zero
Linkin Park (maybe)
Staind
Nickleback
Stone Temple Pilot
Three Day Grace
Godsmack
Foo Fighters
Creed
Our Lady Peace
3. constipated rock
Alternative 90's and later rock music wherein the band's lead singer constantly sounds like he's pinching a cement loaf. First made popular by Bruce Springsteen, later adapted by Top 40 crackers like Nickelback and Three Days Grace.
"Hey, did you hear that new Chad Kroeger song?"
"No way, I can't stand that constipated rock. He sounds like he needs a stool softener!"
"Well, it's still better than screamo"
4. Indie rock kid
A preteen/teenager who has an indie (independant)/rocker style.

Apperance:

Boys would usually have quite messy hair, which even though would probably be in some sort of side-fringe, would be nothing like scene/emo hair. Boys would also probably wear rocker jeans, converse and rocker t-shirts.

Girls would have wavy, rocker hair, also maybe in a side-fringe, but not like scene hair, which is usually high-lighted. They would wear denim skirts/jeans, rocker t-shirts and converse.

Personality:

Indie rock kids are usually happy people, that don't care what others think. However, some indie rock kids could be depressed, but they would still have the I-don't-care attitude.

Music:

Indie rock kids would listen to:

-> Rock (but not modern emo rock)
-> Indie
-> Alt. rock
-> Some alt.metal (but not emo/gothic metal)
-> Grunge

:)
Indie rock kids, I SALUTE YOU!
5. Rock nazi
One that discriminates against other rock sub-genres. This person doesn't appreciate the widely diverce world of rock n roll and would rather stick to that one lonely sub-genre. This person could like 80s hair metal and resent grunge or like punk and hate arena/hard rock etc etc. Or maybe they could just like metal and hate everything else. Rock nazis really need to stop being such snobs and open their eyes. Whether it's blues rock, alt rock, punk or whatever (except for pop rock and emo. Most people agree that's not even real rock n roll anyway.) As I was saying, just try listening to something a little out of your comfort zone. Try it. You might like it.
"Look at the guy in the Dyeing Fetus t-shirt putting down The Doors. Damn rock nazi.
6. indie rock
Indie rock is short for a rock band that's on independent record label. Its not a sound or a music style. The media has apparently confused or brain washed people who don't know what it is to start believing it is tho. Really since the 70s and 80s indie rock bands have gotten mainstream attention without being on a major label. Notable since the 70s to 2000s are joy division,the smiths,oasis,blur,the libertines,arcade fire. Which are all alternative. So when someone says its all the same or is a sound it makes no sense cause theres hardrock bands,heavy metal bands,punk rock bands and more different rock genres on a indie label.
Girl: have you heard indie rock like the killers,death cab for cutie,the strokes? they all have the indie sound. Guy: no those bands are on major labels and indie rock does not have a sound. But I love those bands. Girl: oh!
7. garage rock (2000s)
garage rock of the 2000s. Labeled by the media as garage rock revival for it gaining mainstream interest again. but there have been different revivals in garage rock going threw the 50s,60s,70s. Starting around 2000 to 2001. Bands like the strokes,the white stripes,the hives and the vines are the first four bands to get mainstream success. This sound is on the alt-rock side of things so with there success they thankfully kicked nu-metal off the alt-rock stations. Also imo along with post-punk revival the best rock genres of the 2000s.
Garage rock (2000s) are also the libertines,black rebel motorcycle club,the D4,yeah yeah yeahs,the von bondies,the datsuns,arctic monkeys,kings of leon,the black keys,cage the elephant,twin berlin,harlem,the soft pack exc exc
