The famous Avtomat Klashnikova Model 1947 (AK47) is, along with it's scores of variants, the most widely used and manufacutured assault rifle in the world. Developed orginally for mobile units of the Russian Army, the AK rifles have found their way into the hands from hundreds of other militaries, as well as terrorist groups. Caliber of the orginal AK47/AKM was 7.62x39mm. The 7.62mm caliber has been phased out in Russia, which now favors the 5.45x39mm, chambered in the AK74.

The AK47 is so widespread as it is extremely reliable and tough, you can beat people with it and almost completely ignore maintenance and it'll work fine, unlike the M16, which constantly jams and is very hard to clean. It has a fairly fast rate of fire at 600 rounds per minute (RPM) and fires an extremely powerful round with better baslistics than most other rounds. It is cheap and easy to make, unlike the M16 which isn't. The only real drawback is that it's very heavy, at over 4.3 kg for the AK, and 3.14 kg for the AKM.
