something to be sacred — despite privately recognizing its absurdity or exaggeration — in order to exploit legal, institutional, or bureaucratic protections afforded to “sacred” beliefs or practices.
(Not the same as hypocrisy — it’s more
like gaming the system through "holy" theater.)
