1. Yu-Gi-Oh is a card-game/show that tries to get in on the markets created by games such as Magic: The Gathering and Poke`mon. There are essentially three types of cards in this game: Monsters, traps, and magic (the latter of the two are nearly indistinguishable from one another). Comparitively, Magic: the Gathering has creatures, sorceries, lands, instants, enchantments, artifacts, and then various sub-types.
When a card is played, it stays face down on the table until you either confront it with something, or the owner chooses to flip it. Essentially, the game comes down to having the biggest, meanest, and (obviously) most expensive cards you can get for you deck. This game is about as complex as Pokemon, and that is a pretty sad thing. 2. The show the card game is based upon. Many claim that the dubbing ruined it- just like everyone claims every other anime show. The premise of the show is basically Yugi's grandfather is captured by the evil Pegasus, who wants to unluck the power of the millenuim pieces and cards. So Yugi, who has a pyramid necklace called a "puzzle," sets out with his friends to Pegesuses island to enter his card competition. He then beats people in impossible situations using his puzzle to turn into his taller, deeper voiced alter-ego. Depite the fact that he's twice as tall as midget-boy Yugi and has a easily distinguished voice, the other characters remain ignorant of the change. He then wins by places his trust in the cards and lectures the people he beats about how they don't believe in their cards or treat them right. In other words, it's the same recurring theme from Pokemon. The further the show progresses, the more ridiculous it becomes with it's Egyptian pharoh thing and the recent "God-cards" (further alienating those who don't have or refuse to spend large sums of money to buy those cards). Don't believe what fans say: this is, essentially, Pokemon all over again- just with darker looking monsters. Now the Yugi-fans are going to get me...

A Japanese animation show. The people who dubbed it really messed it up, but if you read the manga, or watch the Japanese version with subtitles, it's actually pretty good. The card game's fun. I play it and it takes a bit of thinking to win. Yu-gi-oh is nifty. Everybody out there who judges this show by one episode of the badly edited North American version needs to shut up plzkthx. D:

Yu-Gi-Oh, although a brilliant anime and manga, is misunderstood by most North American lamers. Recently, uncut versions of the show were released, and have been selling like crazy. I was very happy when I found out they were making uncut versions. Anyway lamers, lets clear your lamer minds.
1. The English version sucks because it is badly dubber (although, the English track on the uncut DVDS is pretty good...though most of you probably watch it subbed anyway. 2. It is not a kids show. The unedited version of the show is rated PG to TV14 and the manga is rated teen. 3. The whole "OMG! JAPAN IS USING IT TO SELL US THEIR CRAP THING!!!!" is also lame, the real first season of Yu-Gi-Oh didn't invlove cards at all, but people liked the idea of the issue of the manga he did use them so he decided to use them more. 4. If you make fun of someone for playing this, you might as well go make fun of people for playing Halo and chess. THEY ARE FREAKING GAMES! Who cares if you don't like them? People like to have their fun. Yu-Gi-Oh is a good anime/manga series if you look over lame stereotypes and give it a chance.

Another Japanese cartoon that has become so popular that it spread to other parts of the world. Debuting in 1996 in popular Anime/Manga magazine, "Shonen Jump", by creator Kazuki Takahashi. Main character 'Yugi' must help his dark half, an Egyptian Pharoah who has lost his memory, save the world from dark evil that never seems to end. A 5,000 year old game has been linked to the present day in this popular Anime series which has hooked (mostly) boys from 6-17.
That's the clean and nice version. This is the original. When originally published weekly in the magazine, Yugi and his small group of friends, Téa, Joey and Tristan, just try to get through life living in Japan while attending a private high school. Yugi seems to get involved in "adult" situations usually involving guns, gang violence, and sex, and has to find a way out. His other, dark, half comes out whenever he feels Yugi is in trouble and challenges his enemies to games where if they lose, they must play a "penalty game" where their life is changed to make them have a taste of their own medicine. That's what it was like in Japan, before it hit American Censors. To anyone who feels this is just another Pokémon or other Anime, blame the censors, not Japan. And, to those who are knocking this HUGE hit, how many graphic novels have you read that make you know what the real story is? Don't knock it 'till you tried it. Person 1: Hey, did you read Yu-Gi-Oh book 5 yet?
Person 2: Not yet, but I can't wait! Person 3: You actually read that? Persons 1 and 2: Yeah. Who in their right mind isn't reading "Yu-Gi-Oh!"? |

1. Pronounced by elite purist fans as "Yuugiou", the Japanese spelling.
2. A mutilation of the decent Japanese anime show. 3. Not a Pokemon and Digimon ripoff 4. A CCG game played by children and teens alike. 5. An anime containing the character Yugi. Purist form: Yuugi Has star-shaped hair. Flamer: "Yu-Gi-Oh is a crappy little kids' show."
Purist: "Yuugiou, fool! And it kicks ass!" |

Definition 1 - an anime from Japan that was butchered to make it a little kids show. However, in Japan it was not a little kids show, but, thanx to censores, a lot of people in north america believe it to be a little kids show do to the crappy editing and cheesy voice-overs. The show was very good in Japan, however.
Definition 2 - a tcg (trading card game) that is popular throughout the world. Contrary to popular belief, the game is NOT a "little kids" baby card game, the rules and to complex and advanced for little kids to understand. And most of the good players are between the ages of 15 and 25. So its unfair for ignorant, immature people who dont play and dont understand how to play to mock it just because they dont understand it. The game is very fun and requires a lot of intelligence and strategizing. Immature people like to mock it because they aren't intelligent enough to understand how to play, so they make fun of the game to feel better about themselves. non-yu-gi-oh player - "haha u queer, you play yu-gay-ho. haha!"
yu-gi-oh player - "thats fine, at least i'm doing something productive that is not harmful to anybody, what are you doing, besides demonstrating your immaturity and ignorance?" |
