Trap or die relates to the term "eat what you kill." Many jobs in the world are commission based. At commission only jobs you "eat what you kill" meaning you only make money on the business you bring to the company and if you don't bring any business in, you don't eat. Hence the phrase "trap or die." It describes what you have to do to survive. In order to eat what you kill, you must trap or die... It's a tough world out there, you trap or die.
