New York City, most typically Manhattan; used primarily by bridge-and-tunnelers and other rednecks.
Yo, I'm going into the City tonight. Meet me at Penn Station. Later!

MANHATTAN!!!!!!!

Brooklyn is not "the city."
The Bronx is not "the city."
Queens is not "the city."
And Staten Island CERTAINLY is not "the city."
And Long Island isn't even a borough.
Oh please don't tell me you went to an inner city school when you went to Tottenville.

New York City, the greatest FUCKING city in da woyld. Everyone whose not from New York is a FUCKING BARBARIAN.
People who are not from The City, such as Long Island, or West Chester, or Rockland's Country, do not have the luxury of indoor plumbing as we City folk do.

But then again, we civilized folk wouldnt have milk or meat if it wasn't four the agriculture of the Upstate New York.

"the city" is used by anyone who lives around Chicago to refer to it. If you say "I'm going into Chicago" people will look at you wierd.
Suburbanite A: I'm going into the city today to pick up some hookers
