A band whose 1st album came out in 2001. It is their most known album. Due to it being pop-punk, many musically inclined people disliked the band and swore them off right there as talentless, despite "Pain for Pleasure" a metal song, likely an Iron Maiden tribute.

They have 5 albums. In them, Sum 41 has a different sound in each album. Their 2nd album is pop-punk with a little alt metal. Their 3rd album has 2 punk songs amidst melodic hardcore, alt metal, metal, and 2 quiet songs, the band cited Metallica as an influence for this album. (They have also played a full length Master of Puppets cover.) The bands 4th album went back to their roots, stripping the metal influence. This album is pop-punk. Their 5th album is closer to a sequel to their third, with much louder vocals and much better instrumental parts. It is an alt metal/alt rock album with punk influence. Their third and fifth albums also have many shifts from soft to loud within songs. They have songs that include all 4 members on vocals, and utilize a lot of vocal harmony.

Basically, this band isn't groundbreaking most of the time, but they go into a lot of music and pull it off well. Most people write them off due to their first album or think they are copying Metallica, Oasis, Green Day, Blink-182, Linkin Park, etc.

They're a pop rock band, influenced by punk, metal and rap.
They never claimed to be 'punk' so all you petty losers can stop your bitching.
Just because a band has an army of teeny fans doesn't detract from the fact that their music is actually...pretty damn good.
sum 41 are GREAT!

During an MTV interview, they actually described themselves as "well, we're sorta like playskool's 'My-First-Punk-Band'"
also quoted:
"our music is like (pretends to beat box) with a twist of lemon"

SUM 41 is a commercially driven modern rock band created by someone or a group of people who choose to use bright colors and flashy lights in videos and on people as a vehicle for their advertising. Ideal MTV band.
Oh my god I feel a lot better now that I've loaded every single SUM 41 .mp3 onto my yellow iPod that perfectly matches my LIVE STRONG bracelet and my yellow "brimmed-beanie".

A Canadian pop-punk/mall punk band that was made popular by middle schoolers and high school freshmen. Oh wait, they're trying to be emo now, right?
I saw Sum 41 live once and they were God awful in that they didn't sound anything like they do on their albums.

A shit, suck-ass poser band that, even if they weren't such jackass posers, suck ass. Their instrumentals are shitty or, at best, generic, and they're lyrics are stupid as hell, for example, "Strolling through the party like my name was El Nino/Well, I'm hanging out drinking in the back of an El Camino" or "Tell me now, what have we done?/We don't know." They haven't gotten any better on any of their later albums, and in their last one they even ripped off GOOD bands such as (old school) Metallica and even Oasis. Apparently copyrights don't apply to Sum 41.

Lots of futily rebellious kids who watch lots of MTV and like to think they're a badass punks by listening to this so-called "punk" music, and whose only defense against those who say how shitty their precious band really is is, "Fuck you, haters! They never said they were punk!" Contrary to what a lot of posters have said, the singer HAS been quoted as referring to their music as "punk".

Also, the band members all have LAME-ASS nicknames such as Stevo 32 and Brown Sound, and are in real life major assholes (I've read on some of the shit they've said and done).
I have heard Sum 41 and have even seen them play on TV and they suck shit.

Sum 41 sounds different when they play (even more shitty than they already are).

MTV teenybopper: Wow, look at me! I just bought the new Sum 41 CD along with a new studded wrist band and eye-liner! I'm so punk!
