To temporarily shut off the thinking part of your brain and focus only at the task at hand, such as eating, playing video games, watching television, or exercising.

Husband: ".........." (Eats dinner while running sleep mode)

Wife: "Whatcha thinking about?"

Husband: "..........Nothing." (Continues eating as he enters sleep mode again)

When you have nothing really important to do, so you temporarily shut down your brain and daydream, a bit like a computer.

Brian: What's wrong?
Zach: Ugh, Will was totally in sleep mode during my presentation. IT WAS IMPORTANT!

Sleep Mode

A state of power when a computer saves memory of the applications open into RAM. When the computer is awake, the applications will reappear from the RAM unless a wake failure occurs.

Tech Support: Please state your problem.
Person: I put my computer in sleep mode and it wont turn back on!
Tech Support: There must've been a sleep-wake failure. Please restart the computer.
