| 1. | Sheugh | ||

Literally, a drainage ditch. Metaphorically, the Irish Sea or latterly the Atlantic Ocean. Used regularly by Adrian McKinty in his trilogy of hard-boiled crime fiction novels featuring the protagonist Michael Forsythe. I hope to cross the sheugh for my thirtieth birthday.
