The insult is directed towards witches or wizards who are Muggle-born, someone with non-magic parents. This term is usually used by haughty pure-bloods, witches or wizards who are of magical descent and consider themselves to be higher up in rank. Such as the Malfoy family. The term Muggle-born is very much preferred to the term 'Mudblood.' Throughout the course of the books discrimination against Muggle-borns or 'Mudbloods" intensifies.

The term used for insulting Muggle-borns or First-Generation witches or wizards. Mudblood is the thing all of the prejudice is based on. Students of Hogwarts seem not to really care about skin color or gender. Instead, it focuses on the bloodline of a witch or wizard. Contrary to popular beliefs, Muggle-borns or Mudbloods are just as good, if not better than Purebloods.

A mudblood is a child with one parent who is white and another parent who is black (or sometimes just non-white). The pure white blood has been "dirtied" by the black blood, hence the term "mudblood". The mudblood's white parent is most often refered to as a "mudshark".

One who has a parent of Christian descent and a parent of Jewish descent. Thus the blood of said person is contaminated by the Jewish portion of the family creating a Mudblood.

A mudblood is someone who is half-jewish. Because said individual is only 1/2 Jew, he or she is not pure (because only full jews are pure) so he or she is a mudblood.
