Something that is liked by a majority of people and doesn't pertain to any particular subculture. Mainstream is not a particular style of music, it has nothing to with rap, it has nothing to do with the media forcing various types of music down our throats. It's just stuff that a lot of people like. That's it.
And as for the people saying shit like "Mainstream should die"... What do you think would happen if everyone started listening to the more underground music that you like?

It would be mainstream. Faggot.

the death of creativity in a music genre.
Metal went mainstream and now its pretty much dead, grunge died as quickly as it rose to mainstream, rap is way too mainstream and is gonna be next.

Those who are normally hooked to whatever society says is popular, or cool. If you think about it really, there is a mainstream of non-mainstream kids. What the non-mainstream kids say you have to be in order to be non-mainstream.
I listen Green Day. I listen to epo-555. Mainstream can be good if ignorant fucks would stop conforming and hating everything that's on mtv. Who gives a fuck?

The bane of the elite, mainstream media (mostly musical) receives constant abuse from many listeners of underground/unsigned bands/musicians.

A band is often labled mainstream when it attempts to appeal to a wider audience, such as when Slipknot released 'The Subliminal Versus', or Cradle of Filth's more recent releases.

Of course the most topical band on this subject at the moment is Green Day. After releasing 'American Idiot', the elitist hoards (as opposed to the pop-culture masses) cried out curses of 'Selling Out'.

Unfortunatly this will never end, because there must always be an underdog, and elitism is blessed cross to bear.

Although one must ask the question, out of the mainstream and the underground, which is the oppressor, and which is the oppressed...
Brian was a big Green Day fan, and would wash his corn flakes down with Longview every morning.

One day he turned on the radio and a song came on called American Idiot, and he quite liked it. He was humming it as he walked to school before realising that eveyone else was as well.

My God, his favourite band had become popular! It was no longer his alone, it belonged to the unwashed hoards now!

Falling to his knees, tearing his Basket Case t-shirt and looking up into the downpour of rain, he declaired unto the Heavens, "I HAVE NO SON!" before realising that he really did have no son and was actually pissed about his band's success.

People say that if you hang around in the bushes outside of Brian's house at night, you can still hear the faint tones of When I Come Around over his weeping.

CRAPPY MUSIC that goes by the standards and implied guidelines set by other songs that are currently popular.

The only inkling of individuality is either a) the lead singer's voice, or b)the fucking tone of the guitar.
Both of those are still a rarity.

Sometimes, you can define a mainsrteam band by the ranking they are at on the top 40 list, or the iTunes most popular. But not always, because sometimes good indie music is mistakenly put there.
jock: "Dude, I just got this new CD. It's 'American Idiot' man!! I feel so bad-ass! Aren't they awesome, singing about America and shit?!"

smart indie kid: "Fuck man, don't spend money on that mainstream garbage.
Go buy some Pinback."

This word lives a double life. On the one hand, it can describe something that is legitimately popular because it is good. However, through the hipster douche movement, the phrase "this ___ is mainstream" is used almost as often as "I love PBR" and "I need some more baby powder and Crisco to fit in my jeans."

According to many hipsters (or at least the obnoxiously arrogant ones), any musical artist that is signed to a label, sells music online or attracts more than a dozen people to his/her show is "mainstream," a "sellout," or any other word they found in their thesaurus they bought with their parents money.
One definition: "The band broke into the rock mainstream with its smash hit (insert song here)."

The newer definition: "Screw (insert band name here), that band is so mainstream. Come on, guys. Let's all dress in an identical manner and listen to music Pitchfork tells us is cool."
