This word was actually started by myself, and not SPH. It dates back to the days when the biggest ISPs were AOL, Prodigy and Excite. I used to type LoL with two upper-case Ls. In the process of capitalizing the Ls, I would use the left shift key, since the 'L' key is on the right side of the keyboard. Unfortunately I had issues with hitting the 'z' key in conjunction with the shift key, or not hitting the shift key at all, so often it came out as lolz or lzolz. It had nothing to do with a plural form of lol or for that matter laughing-out-loud zealously. If you want proof, go look up my nickname in a search engine, and see how far back my lolz references date back. AOL keeps logs of all publically help interviews with celebs, you will see an early use of lolz by myself in a few of them, one which dates back to 1995 (although I was using it before that time). The majority of the kids on this site weren't even out of diapers in 1995. I however am the biggest computer geek in a tri-state area, and I was 16 in 1995.

Everybody else here is entirely incorrect, and it's unbelievable to what a degree.

"LOL" is the signular form, and "LOLZ" is simply the plural.

Meaning "lol's" or more than one "lol".

Adding a lowercase "z" at the end (Proper form, LOLz, or LoLz to switch between capitals and lowercase as is commonly done by a number of prepubescent horny teens, namely girls) does not necessarily add another word to the acronym. Just like if I were to write to you about "STDs", I would not be talking about Sexually Transmitted Disease Succotash, but rather multiple Sexually Transmitted Diseases.
Here in teh intranets, teh misconsepshins are teh commonplace, LoLz.

Spinoff of 'lol', internet slang for laughing out loud. What the 'z' stands for, God only knows.

A term for LOL (meaning 'laugh out loud' in chat-speak), usually typed by mindless ditzes who can't speak right.

1. lolz (n., pl.) - The leet plural of lol

In leet speak, plurals are generally denoted by a 'z' instead of an 's', so lols becomes lolz.

2. lolz (v.) - A leet corruption of lols

Treating lol as a verb (to lol), the he/she/it conjugation of lol in the present indicative tense is 'lols', (i.e. I lol, we lol, he lols).
Using the leet practice of replacing 's' with 'z', this is corrupted to 'lolz' (I lol, we lol, he lolz)

1. "That was sooo funny! lolz!!"

2a. "N af7r 7h47 he lolz r33lly h4rd"
2b. "And after that he lolz really hard"

When lol just isn't enough. Or an emphasis for lol to make sure your friends know you think its funny. Anybody who uses it in a real talking conversation is stupid.
