Used to describe a style of subculture for those closely associated with indie music. Indie people generally:
Listen to: Arcade Fire, tilly on the wall, tokyo police club, bishop allen, tv on the radio, The Ting Tings, Bright Eyes, cold war kids, The faint, ghostland observatory, of montreal, Interpol, bloc party... as a general rule, if its from the UK its usually pretty good. \Also they get disinterested as soon as a band gets big and signs with a major record label (examples - death cab for cutie, modest mouse, Franz Ferdinand, the killers, the strokes, arctic monkeys)
Wear: converse shoes, stripes, band shirts, vintage clothing, leather jackets, tight fitting jeans, messenger bags, thick rimmed glasses,
Eat: organic wraps, vegan foods, coffee
own: flight of the Concords on dvd, Donnie Darko, the science of sleep, fight club, garden state, microKORG, vintage record player, acoustic guitar, tambourine.
regular dude - Hey you wanna come with me to the maroon 5 concert this Friday?
Indie Kid - no thanks, I would rather stay at home and paint while listening to fleet foxes.
An indie will never tag themself as indie but will reiceve the tag from the people and peers around them.it's about being yourself.
It isn't a trend, it's a way. Your just like that. An indie has their style and no matter how much copperates target wannabes. Wannabe can never be indie because indie means independant / not mainstream -completly different to sell out "indie" stuff like (vans and pennyboards).
-Indies are indie because of their taste in music. It also sets out the real indies from the fake. Their taste is alternative and indie.
-The Arts are a big part of indie life.
-Indies dont mind what other people think of them. But they still try to look good/presentable.
- They have vintage looking taste and will stay away from mainstream trends.
- The reason i don't list what clothes they wear is because only wannabe indies would care.
Big mistake people make:
- Indies think they are more superior then everyone else. They don't think that they look like that because they don't respond to the glares of judgement from the scene.
-Indies hate all mainstream music. They will mostly stay away from it but may sometime enjoy a song in the top 40. What they hate is cooperates selling bands advertising them as mainstream.
-Indies are Emo, this one will probably piss an indie off the most. Emos basically stole the indie look and made it all black.
Indies dont mind what other people think of them. But they still try to look good/presentable.
~Wannabe indie: Wakes up with bed hair goes out in public
~Indie Guy: wakes up combs hair, styles it to look like bed hair.
~ Wannabe indie (tries to be indie): I'm so indie i got some vans and downloaded snow patrol they so rule.
~ Indie: You could never be indie because indie can't be bought.
~Wannabe Indie: Goes on the internet to see what a indies wears so they could go to school thinking their indie.
~ Wannabe Girl Indie: Im so indie i like love the indie music and the pennyobards are so cool like thats sooo indie. Indie like totally rule. Ekkkkkkkk
~ Indie Girl: You could never be an indie even if your life depended on it. No website on the world would tell you how to be indie.
Call yourself Indie. Your not indie if you do that. If you think you need to do that for people to think your "cool" then you are a wannabe indie.
Indie is short for independent. Popularly used as a short term for "indie rock", although this is meant to be inaccurate.
Some people are unaware that indie rock is just rock music whose artists are on an independent (or indie) record label.
Indie is not a genre of music. It can be hip hop on an independent record label. The latter is a record label which operates without funding by major record labels.
There are also indie films, indie art, etc., which are films/art/etc which are independent from commercial, mainstream establishments (just like indie music).
dizzee rascal, rebecca black, fleet foxes and arcade fire are all indie artists. they are on independent record labels.
1. A term used to describe a band/artist/etc. who does not belong to a big name record label, or no label at all. Though all these shitheads who put definitions here years ago all talk about a relation between "Emo" and "Shit rock music" they are wrong. Indie is not only rock. For every genre of music there is, there is an underground ('Indie', for people who can't keep up) scene behind it. Indie could also refer to the indie culture around it. As much as people want to swear up and down against labeling and the such, it just is what it is. There *is* an indie culture in lingo, interests, CLOTHES, etc. Many people like to spot an "Indie Kid" as anyone in their teens to mid twenties:
-wearing faded skinny jeans
-a cardigan, military jacket, pea coat, etc.
-wearing boots all the time
-walk around with an ironic expression on their face
-drink. And then drink some more.
Those are just some of the things a "typical" indie kid would wear or do.
Additional Information; Hipsters are the ones who are somewhat hard to tell apart. Hipsters may look and dress like an Indie Kid, but are somehow different. They may even listen to the same music as Indie Kids, but apparently they are still different.
Hipsters are normally the ones who are just about as indie as Indie Kids except for perhaps one thing (which takes away their indie title): Listening to mainstream.
That's it. Listening to the occasional mainstream.
The Real Nicole Zamalin
"No one listens to the same music I do. Belle & Sebastian? so indie!"
Indie is a word that has a slightly different meaning for every person on the planet. Here is my definition, Indie is simply being oneself, however only people that are "independent" enough from the norm are recognized as Indie. You do not have to like obscure bands to be Indie, you can like a bit of everything and still be Indie, even pop music
, Indie isn't even solely defined by what music you like anyway. It's one aspect, but the clothes you wear, the language you use, your personality. Still, only a few people can be Indie, and you can't learn it, your just born with it. Within Indie, people are still not completely independent of each other, take Pendulum
for example, alot of people like them, alot of indie people do too. Indie people share interests and do not all like completely different things, here is what I believe the formula for Indie is, 20-15% pop culture
, 80-85% personality/personal taste. It's similar to Ribena, pop culture is Ribena, personality is water, without the pop culture(Ribena) , you and Indie(water and Ribena) will taste nothing alike, Even Indie people need some common ground, or being Indie would be boring, and without the water(personality) your just generic old pop culture, you have nothing to offer the Indie community. But then again, that's just how I define Indie.
Normal guy: Hey, sup
Indie: Not much, just listening to some anamanaguchi
Normal guy: That names retarded
Indie: Have a listen (plugs in earphones)
Normal guy: Hey, that's pretty cool and chiptuney
Indie: Yeah, it's good shizz
, well, I'll be on my way, see yah.
Normal guy: Wow, he was nice, pretty cool too, he just had some indescribable aura about him.
Indie means independent right? so it means pretty much any band that releases an album or song independantly without using major record companies. so a rocker could release an album by himself and its Indie. A rapper could then theoretically release an album by himself and he'd technically also be indie. A techno song could be Indie. so could pop, grunge, metal, jazz, etc etc. as long as its released independently.
So why the FUCK do people keep calling it a genre?
Person 1: My favourite genre of music is rap.
Person 2: I hate rap, i loooove Indie though. Especially Atmosphere.
Person 1: But he's a rapper........
