a supercilious term that politicians use to refer to redneck/rural/blue collar/country bumpkin/working class Americans so said politicians can appeal to as many constituents as possible. By using this phrase to appeal to the masses, everyone ranging from Joe the Plumber to Wanda the hooker can say, "yeah, I'm a hardworking American. I'll vote for Obama!"
I understand that jobs are hard to find for hardworking Americans. But I will authorize government bailouts for the banking and financial services so that hardworking Americans like yourselves can get a loan to buy a home or go back to school
