A label that most people puts on another who wears dark,(preferably black), clothes. Unfortunately, it is a label on someone's exterior and not how they are like.

I am not exactly sure how that label came to be, but I suppose every kind of style needs labeling so society can judge everyone by their clothing.
I have to say a few words about this. My whole family started to question me because of what I was wearing. . And my uncle thought I was goth. So, my sadistic uncle got a laptop computer out and looked up the definition of:

Emo - A topic that we were talking about when someone thought I was that.

Preppy Goth - My mom wants me to be a prep, but she would really rather settle for this. Umm. . No.

Goth - Main topic of conversation.

I thought I would include that because that is most of the reason why I am defining this, and an example of how lame it is,(I find it a priviledge to have the courage to be different, but it is very difficult when closed minded people such as my family shut you out, give you a hard time, label you, or try to change you), to not wear something from Abercrombie and Fitch or a store that doesn't have the *in* stuff. People tend to over react about them. .

Gothic culture and style is whatever the perpetrator wants it to be. Every individual has their own interpretation of what is and what is not Gothic. The style is based on a few basic common denominators: black usually being the precursor to the rest. A person who adopts the Gothic style will inevitably place their own mark on what is deemed to be 'Goth', variants in style, poise and demeanour are common among Goth's and no two are ever the same. Goth's as a sub-culture are undeniably the most misunderstood, the stereotypes portrayed by the media and other groups (i.e. the chav) are grossly inaccurate and offensive on occasion! 90% of the Gothic culture revolves around intellect, creativity and differentiation. A usual Goth will try to distance themselves from the 'norm' of society, sometimes to feel different, sometimes for attention (although on a temporary basis) but nine times out of ten it is just because they want to. A Goths' individuality is paramount, we do it because we want to and we do it because it makes us feel happy and secure within our own skin...nothing more.
Individual, creative, insightful, unique to themselves. These are presiding attributes of the Gothic culture.

1) a subculture grouping usually classified by non-goths as anybody who is depressed and wears black. that's not the half of it. goths range widely in mentality and appearance. some of them are very depressed, wear black, and link about suicide. some others can be happy and fun, but simply have pessimistic tendancies and a dark, sarcastic sense of humor. many goths in middle school and high school were nerds in elementary school. many goths are quite smart and creative, liking to write and draw. goths prefer to be alone or with people like them, and can't stand most "normal" people. they tend to be quiet and reluctant to draw attention to themselves, even shy at times, but inside they can be affectionate and even sweet if they're in the right mood. they don't care about what people think of them, it's how they think of themselves that matters to them. if a goth gets a haircut and nobody likes it, he/she doesn't care as long as he/she likes it. goths tend to be inquisitived to a point that they offend other people with questions regarding religion. can be quite defensive of their opinions. sometimes stubborn. doesn't like to make friends. if you want to be friends with a goth (hypothetical situation), you have to go slow, be content to just be aqquaintances for a while until the goth gets confortable around you, as goths don't like to socialize too often. GOTHS ARE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FROM MARYLIN MANSON!

2)goths are often very reluctant to share opinions and ideas or anything they've written or drawn, but if approached the right (or wrong, depending on your outlook) way, they can be somewhat crude and in-your-face. goth is actually short for gothic, coming from several tribes in europe around the time of the roman empire (some of them actually caused the fall of it)
1) Maria's father died, and ever since she has been goth.

2) The Visigoths invaded the northern roman empire in it's last days, about the same time as the vikings.

There are two kinds of goth:
1) Usually a very creative and philosophical person. They are fairly intelligent, listen to many kinds of music although it is rarely packaged, plastic pop. If they do then it is because they want to rather than due to a need to fit in. These people are themselves, they are real. Not all of them are Satanists, they are not suicidal, murderous, or even scary as long as you don't fear what is different. They can be fun and happy and aren't ashamed to laugh at themselves. Goths do not appreciate being labeled. They usually wear a good amount of black, but have their own unique styles and wear color sometimes. They often have a dark disposition. Some people call me a goth, but I just consider myself different :)

2) Someone who just wants to rebel, or thinks that being goth is cool. They listen to bands like Slipknot and Korn, thinking that they are "soooo hardcore n' goffik". No offence to Marilyn Manson, but many of these posers will listen to him too. They are over emotional and whiny and just miss the entire idea of what a goth really is.
Real Goth: Hey man, how is it going?

Fake Goth: The world is crying and I want to kill myself and skin my family!! And I'm just so goth! So gothic I could just hang myself!!!

RG: *Looks around uncomfortably* well... don't do that... there is too much to live for... hey, maybe you should see a school counselor or something.

FG: No! They don't understand me, no one does! Only Fred Durst! Only he! *Charges away to bathroom*

RG: Poor guy. Wait, Fred Durst? What the?! Sigh. *goes back to reading poetry and hanging out with friends*

Note: I had no intentions of making fun of suicidal people, having been in that state myself a few years ago. I merely wanted to mock the fake goths who act suicidal for attention.

A movement that arose from the death of Punk in the 1980's and embraces creativity, individuality, and exploring the more morbid side of things.

Goth has been totally eclipsed by emo these days and the two are, atrociously, often confused, though they are nothing alike: goths are somber and intelligent with a flair for the artistic, while emos are skinny-ass teenagers who do nothing but bitch about their lives.
"That girl is SOOOOOOOO emo."

"You fuckhead, she's a goth!"

Yet another pointless label.

"Goths" are people that may wear black that May listen to death metal that may wear trench coats. However thats not what all goths wear. There are HUNDREDS of different catorgorys of goth.

Some may be depressed and selfharmers. Others are happy lovley people. Theres happy and depressive people in every sub culture so i dont understand why goths have such a bad reputation for being depressed.

I know many goths that DONT cut themselves that DONT worship satan that ARNT depressed. I get that alot of them are depressed ect but so are alot of townies/neds/scrotes/chavs.

Just because someone wears black it doesnt mean they are goths.

Stop giving them hassle because they want to be different. If you dont like the style dont wear it...simple...isnt it
Problems goths face
* Nicknames such as "that gay devil worshipping freak that dyed his hair purple"
* Wearing a black turtleneck when it's 90 degrees outside
* Being asked to defend your entire existence in 30 seconds or less.
* Having little kids tug on their parent's arm and say, "Look, Mommy, isn't she pretty? I want to look like her!" while the parents grab the child and run for it
* Attempting to explain Goth to anyone
* Religion: while everybody still thinks you are a Devil-worshipper despite all your explanations..
* Trying to explain to people that the scars up and down your arms are actually from your cat.
