A follower/fan of music that was different/older/barbaric compared to others. There is really no specific type, as pop can also be included. There is also not necessarily much else in common, as with any other group. A "goth" can be anyone, assuming they enjoy the music described.

Misuse has also applied the term to metalheads, industrial fans, and the "suicidal" yuppie children. The bands currently labeled incorrectly as gothic include Marilyn Manson, Slipknot, and most nu-metal, or industrial-metal hybrids.
Joy Division were gothic compared to the rest of the music scene.

simply, what you want it to be.

The term originates from a Neo-Classicist during the 1800's, comparing the Romantics to the Goths of old who sacked Rome. The term stuck, though it has been warped over the ages. Nowadays it is a sub-culture that emphasizes the dark, spooky and cynical. The heavy, sorrowful themes stem from the Romantic Movement's emphasis on emotion, drama, and the human condition. This includes the color black, vampires, and the works of Edgar Allen Poe.
So those oh-so-witty definitions of goth as a few Germanic tribes are tragically, tragically right.

ahh, the ever-popular definition on this site... I have to say, being a goth myself, this feels a bit weird, but I'm not going to describe myself or posers, or anything like that. My definition in itsself is neutral. It doesn't mean that I am neutral, but still. Ok, here goes...

Goth is a culture. despite what many people think, it is NOT a mindset, NOR is it a style.
It is mostly a very accepting culture, taking in those who don't fit in with everyone else and putting them in with people who will sympathize. Just like in any other culture, there are many variants, but it takes a certain WILL to be goth. If someone says that they are not goth, then they're NOT!!! There is also NO such thing as posers. But just calling yourself to be goth just to be cool under falsehood is damaging the culture's image as a whole, not that anybody in it cares, because we usually don't. But just because you call yourself goth and listen to a certain type of music doesn't make you a poser automatically. Goths can listen to any kind of music that they want. It's a culture of acceptance, internal expression, deepening, and also peace. They should not be made fun of, either. There are fat goths, skinny goths, suicidal goths, normal goths, stupid goths, inteligent goths, artistic goths, and many others just like in the rest of society. There is no one true definition for this urban word, because no two are exactly alike. There are certain groups sure, but some of them are definitly conformist, just like in any other group. Like the people who say that you have to wear something black all the time, listen to certain music, or hang out with other goths to be goths.

In the rural town that I live in, there is NOBODY else in my school that is goth. I'm not goth because I want to be different, but simply because I enjoy being under the VERY wide umbrella of this newly-formed culture because I feel that my ideas have a lot to do with it, and I also take a darker outlook on life. I also think that the music that I listen to and the clothes that I wear are absolutely more beautiful than any thing else that I could wear. I don't care if people tell me that I'm damaging society or make fun of me, because I'm coming as myself and not with a mask on. Figuratively, lol.
The goth culture is slowly infiltrating every corner of the world... BUAHAHAHA!!!!!!

don't worry, it's a silly thing...

1. stereotypical belief: wears black clothing and dark make up, listens to heavy rock and metal. is depressed and worships satan. talks about suicide and self harms. writes deep and dark poetry to make people think their cool and dark.

the truth: goths arent always deppressed and suicidal, this can be applied to any click, chavs, townies etc can be just as depressed and suicidal as the stereotypical goth.
most are fun loving, and arent worried about what other people think. they will do and listen, like and dislike anything they want and arent worried about the latest fashions and trends.
they wont 'go after' people just because they feel like it, they'll take a beating from a group of chav's, without backing out to find their 'posse'.

2. an east german tribe who left Scandinavia to settle in poland. In the 3rd and 4th centuries, they terrorised the Roman Empire and adopted Arianism. they divided into visigoths and ostrogoths
(for #1)

chav: theres a goth lets go deck him innit son!
goth: hey, why? what'd i do to you?
chav: you dissen me bruv?
goth: erm..what?

(goth's friends appear from the shadows)
goths friends: problem?

chavs: nah, nah blood, is all good innit.

The word Goth has many different meanings to many people, but a simple definition is this: Someone who enjoys a darker perspective on life. Goths tend to be intellectual, philosophical, and romantic. They find beauty in even the ugliest things, and are often attracted to things such as death, morbidity, vampirism, and other such subjects. A true Goth never intends to be Goth, they just are. People who suddenly decide to "become goth" because of their peers are not really Gothic. Also, I'd like to clear the misconception of "Goths being Violent,Anti-Social, or IE Columbine". Real Goths are passive, quiet, and gentle. They are never violent at others, and if a goth "does" pick fights, then that person is not for real.

Some good goth bands to listen to are: L'ame Immortelle, Nightwish, Leave's Eyes, Bauhaus, and Switchblade Symphony.

These people ARE NOT goth: Marylin Manson, Limp Bizkit, ICP (Who in heck thought ICP was goth? Their just, um, Mentally Retarded)and no, My Chemical Romance is not a goth band.

Right, I'm readin all the negative definitions on here about goths and most of them are probably by people who have never held a real conversation with one.

Am I a goth? No I don't consider myself one. The fact that I wear a leather trench, madfish boots and prominently black, does that make me a Goth? I am not a Satanist though, in fact my faith is a little similar to Christianity, but loosley. I have friends from all kinds of tastes - friends that are into the whole r'n'b + hiphop, peple who you could call neds, goths, emo, punk, and these so called 'normals'.

I am a very happy person and do not want to kill myself and have no intention of ever cutting myself, and neither do my friends. Yes I do think about death but only because, in actual fact, it is rather interesting because we have no idea what's going to happen. You can have your own opinion of course but no one really knows. It's fun to come up with theories, and it's a good source of conversation.

If you were to find me on a saturday in Glasgow and to have a conversation or hang about with me and my friends who get called 'goths' on a regular basis, you would probably find our company more enjoyable than the one you keep just now, not because I'm being arrogant or anything, but we don't care what you look like or what you're into, as long as you open minded and friendly.

So, basically, a goth to me is someone into a culture of sorts. A culture of romance for some, immense music and complete hyperness, but also with intelligent conversation every now and then (in my case more often than not courtesy of the almighty bryan). Most goths I know are not depressed or suicidal, but if you were to go up ask them, then it will iritate, so that's probably why you got a mouthfull or a growler. There's nothing wrong with goths, or gothic romanticism or anything like that. And anyone can get depressed, not just goths.
Goths hangin bout together: *enter laughing, joking and
randomness here*
Neds turn up: "Aw look at that mahn. Pure mad depressed
goffs int it mahn."
Goths: *now annoyed* Moronic tube
a real goth:

doesnt care what other people think.

poser goth:

likes marilyn manson.
poser goth:
