ahh, the ever-popular definition on this site... I have to say, being a goth myself, this feels a bit weird, but I'm not going to describe myself or posers, or anything like that. My definition in itsself is neutral. It doesn't mean that I am neutral, but still. Ok, here goes...

Goth is a culture. despite what many people think, it is NOT a mindset, NOR is it a style.
It is mostly a very accepting culture, taking in those who don't fit in with everyone else and putting them in with people who will sympathize. Just like in any other culture, there are many variants, but it takes a certain WILL to be goth. If someone says that they are not goth, then they're NOT!!! There is also NO such thing as posers. But just calling yourself to be goth just to be cool under falsehood is damaging the culture's image as a whole, not that anybody in it cares, because we usually don't. But just because you call yourself goth and listen to a certain type of music doesn't make you a poser automatically. Goths can listen to any kind of music that they want. It's a culture of acceptance, internal expression, deepening, and also peace. They should not be made fun of, either. There are fat goths, skinny goths, suicidal goths, normal goths, stupid goths, inteligent goths, artistic goths, and many others just like in the rest of society. There is no one true definition for this urban word, because no two are exactly alike. There are certain groups sure, but some of them are definitly conformist, just like in any other group. Like the people who say that you have to wear something black all the time, listen to certain music, or hang out with other goths to be goths.

In the rural town that I live in, there is NOBODY else in my school that is goth. I'm not goth because I want to be different, but simply because I enjoy being under the VERY wide umbrella of this newly-formed culture because I feel that my ideas have a lot to do with it, and I also take a darker outlook on life. I also think that the music that I listen to and the clothes that I wear are absolutely more beautiful than any thing else that I could wear. I don't care if people tell me that I'm damaging society or make fun of me, because I'm coming as myself and not with a mask on. Figuratively, lol.
The goth culture is slowly infiltrating every corner of the world... BUAHAHAHA!!!!!!

don't worry, it's a silly thing...

Goths are a part of a counter-cultural movement that embraces the dark side of life. Though some goths are depressed and suicidal, this is not the true basis for the gothic culture. As a counter-culture, goths have a point for their existence. They express their opposition to the norm, their desire for individuality, as well as their pain and suffering through their style, music, attitudes, and spiritual beliefs. Goths are not devil-worshippers, anti-prep, or fixated on death. They are intelligent, individualistic human beings who simply express themselves differently from the mainstream.

Here are some stereotypes of goths:
-they never smile
-they never laugh
-they always wear black
-they worship satan
-they are depressed, suicidal
-they are obsessed with death
-they hate preps
-they do drugs

There are also many types of goths out there. For example, there is your stereotypical goth, your cyber goth, your emo/goth, your industrial goth, your Victorian goth, and many more.

In general, every goth has his/her own definition as to what goth is. So don't knock anyone else's defintion or criticize others for their views.
Gothic is a subculture as well as counter-culture which embraces the dark side of life.

Individual who just want express themselves in the way they act and dress. The most frequent choice of messages expressed seem to be "Black", "Spiky" and "Angry". Goths are often quite lovely people so long as you don't mention this fact. There is no known goth over the age of twenty-two.
"All my goth friends dress in black, avoid sunlight and body pierce, maybe if i do that i'll be individual too".

There is alot of confusion between what a goth is because there is another 'brand' of person of which could be mistaken for one. These two brands are Goths and Goffs a Goff is a person who dresses in dark clothing and listens to rock and metal ect, a Goth is a person who has all this and believes in romantic death.
By this you should be able to understand that catogrising people aint gd coz u have no fuckin idea what u are goin on about and u sld listen to rock and metal ect its gd

Goth=those fucking black clouds that think they are so totally depressed and fucked up that people will notice them. Usually they turn goth because 1)They have no friends 2) They are fucking ugly and decided to make the best of the situation 3) It's the latest trend. Goths fuck up the musical world for the rest of us that like death metal/black metal, because by listening to shit they don't even understand and trying to get noticed people automatically assume that death/black metal is as superficial and stupid as goth itself. Great bands such as Slayer, Arch Enemy, In Flames and Emperor are spoiled daily by these make up wearing freakshows. There is no such thing as a "real" goth. Edgar Allen Poe was a great writer, but not someone you can base your entire image on. In short, goths are posers that spoil music for the rest of us and should be burned.
Goths wear black, have several piercings, ridiculously overdone make-up and emanate fuckface rays.

A subculture pretty much composed of hopeless bums, the founder of which thought it would be super swell to name their fun little group after the music they liked which was named after, I don't know... say... a group of GERMAN INVADERS, and/or a style of architecture utilized in the late middle ages (Durham Castle is a prime example of diffusion between the Romanesque and Gothic styles, actually, but the pure style involves thin columns, pointed archways, many stained-glass windows (making the GOTHIC cathedrals very BRIGHT), all supported by flying buttresses. Heh, the Goths I define, not known particularly for expansive intellects, will laugh at that one.). They prize themselves in being dark, sensitive and artistic, but most importantly, NOT POPULAR. Damn those popular kids! Popularity is sooooo overrated. (Yes, they all secretly want to be popular but find they cannot because nobody actually likes them) And by all means, they are NOT poseurs. In fact, the people whom they detest most are poseurs. You know, people who try to be like them, but could never attain the glory that is... GOTH!

I'll tell you what. Wanna be a nonconformist? Spend your time at the library instead of slitting your wrists, clad in men's work shirts, ties and pocket-protectors. Maybe then you'll actually make something of yourself. And you don't have to be popular, either!
Regular, pretty cool, intellectual college student (mockingly): Hey, emo kid. When you get depressed, do you cut your wrists in every direction? Does singing songs about getting dumped give you an erection?

Nineteen-year-old "Gothic" college-dropout: LIEK ZOMGZ!!! I AM NOT EMO!! EMO KIDS ARE POSEURS!! *punches regular, pretty cool, intellectual college student*

Regular, pretty cool, intellectual college student: It's funny that you did that, because much to your chagrin, I actually have the education necessary to not only submit a complaint to the police department, but defend myself in your battery case! Too bad you spent your days in your dark, depressing oblivion drawing pretty pictures of bleeding unicorns, not taking advantage of your parents' tuition savings. Good luck!
