Goth isnt about how black your clothes are, how many piercings you have, how crappy you can make your eyeliner look, being tough and intimidating, acting or being depressed, listening to mainstream metal or punk, or even acting elite and better than everyone just because you know who Bauhaus is.

MUSIC:

The Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, Fields of the Nephilim, The Mission, All About Eve, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, London After Midnight, (some) Siouxsie and the Banshees, Faces of Sarah, Inkubus Sukkubus, Merry Thoughts, Manuskript, Clan of Xymox, Midnight Configuration, Suspiria, Ausgang, Danielle Dax, Carcrash International, Specimen, Mephisto Walz, Rozz Williams, March Violets, The Creatures, the Birthday Party, Black Tape For A Blue Girl, Die Laughing, Death in June, X-Mal Deutschland, Lene Lovich, Nina Hagen, And Also the Trees, Batfish Boys, In the Nursery, Ipso Facto, Flesh for Lulu, Ordo Equium Solis, Rossetta Stone, Tones on Tail, This Mortal Coil, Killing Joke, Current '93, Dead Can Dance, The Machine in the Garden, Gene Loves Jezebel, Véronique Diabolique, The Cure, Joy Division, Cinema Strange, Echo and the Bunnymen, The Smiths, Coil, Cocteau Twins, The Damned, The Tear Garden, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cruxshadows, The Pixies, Legendary Pink Dots, Moev, Love and Rockets, Ministry, Sleeping Dogs Wake, The Church, and The Cassandra Complex.

Despite the fact that outward appearance does not constitute gothness, many people within the subculture do choose to dress a particular way. Its not usually a matter of conformity, but for aesthetics. For instance, while its tacky to wear white foundation, people within the subculture often seem to find natural paleness more attractive than a tan for whatever reason. Its more aesthetically pleasing, therefore a goth who tends not to venture into the sun without protection may not be doing that to seem overtly goth, but only because pale skin makes them feel more beautiful. The same goes for style.

The gothic "uniform" varies from person to person, for those who choose to wear it. (Its definitely not required.) In fact, its not even a uniform, since creativity, innovation, and style are embraced. Goth style isnt the black t-shirt and baggy pants that the Hot Topic generation would have you believe. Thats not very creative or unique at all. Nor is it aethetically pleasing. Also, black is NOT a must. Other commonly worn color are emeralds, navys, purples, crimsons, and even white and cream.
Various types of materials besides common cotton and polyester are often incorporated into style too. Crushed velvet is popular, along with leather, pvc, lace, rubber, latex, and silk. Bondage fashion is worn by a few, and that doesnt mean wearing Hot Topic pants with those stupid bondage straps in the back. Corsets are a gothic staple for ladies and men. In many instances, Victorian and Edwardian fashions are adopted and modified to unique styles as well. Gothic style is style. Its about looking good, well dressed, made up, gorgeous. For those who choose to don the goth apparel, throwing on Manson t-shirt and some black lipstick isnt going to cut it.

Recently, goth fashion has evolved into something more inspired by other genres like electronica, ebm, darkwave, and industrial as well as goth. Its not always the classic velvet and lace look.

Please do not use certain internet sites to further perpetuate ignorance. Just because a site has the word goth in the URL or somewhere on the page doesnt mean its the ultimate master on all things goth. For every decent website giving good, informed info, there are 10 more passing off stereotypes and nonsense to whoever wants to listen. Use common sense. Find out whats up from people who actually know whats up. You wouldnt ask a preschooler their thoughts on cognitive neuroscience, would you?

1 - Adj.
An art and architectural style often involving towers, gargoyles, and spires. May also describe people who lived in the time and places that these buildings and pieces were constructed or painted.

2 - N.
A type of person, divided into two sub-categories:
A) Emo (ee' - moe) Goth -
The original goth, someone who believes that their life is horrible or mediocre at best, and therefor writes poetry that often includes the word "nihilistic" and love songs. Using bands like Death Cab for Cutie and Brand New to think for them, Emo Goths dye their hair black or red, avoid all eye contact if possible, and flip their long, unkempt hair to the side every so often. They have a habit of staring at the floor and scratching the back of their head with their arms crossed.

B) Hot Topic Goth -
At first, 14-year-olds who enjoyed the Emo look (dyed black hair, old clothes), but did not understand the music (as if there was anything to understand). They were not typically accepted by the rest of the Emo crowd for one reason or another, and therefor shunned by the most shunned group of society. This group is typically ignored by most humans, except for other Hot Topic Goths, so they will stop at nothing to attract attention to themselves. Most Hot Topic goths are bisexual, have abnormal hair colors (green, red, purple), paint their faces black and white in patterns that would have you believe that they have been crying and have some form of depth, play Dance Dance Revolution, and watch Japanese Anime. Also, every hot topic goth must listen to strictly heavy metal, industrial, house, trance, techno, chemical/acid/breakbeat, J-rock, and J-pop. Most of which don't know the difference in the different electronic music genres of which they listen to, and simply incorrectly classify them all as "techno". Most Hot Topic goths, when asked as to why they dress the way they do, reply that they are "misunderstood" and have that other people will not get it, but it is well understood that it is for attemption, and the misunderstood defense is that of faux depth in a shallow goth's personality.
Look at that goth, he's so understandingly misunderstood.

A sub-culture in high school and early college that have fallen out with popular modern culture. They are also known as non-conformists. Most Goths try to create a "unique" and "original" style by becoming the opposite of what they hate. In doing so, they come to a conformist state of their own and exclude those who aren't "hardcore" or cool enough.
Blake changed his name to Blaque because he's a freakin' Goth.

Another word for nerd. Often enjoys anime and dressing up to distract people from the fact that they're just another boring sissified suburbanite. Very often a confused 13 year old girl having trouble fitting in.
That unattractive girl tried to make herself sexier and more interesting by becoming a goth.

First of all, there are several kinds of Goths.

1)Traditional goths: Usually displayed by main charicters in fiction books or movies, Such as Van Helsing or V for Vendetta. "Traditional" goths are bold, creative, and very intelegent people. They usually dress in all black and white. Most Traditional Goths do not wear all the spiky studded stuff. Usually just long dark clothes made of Leather or Velvet. They are usually on the brighter side of life and expect the unexpected. They simply choose this life style because it is different from the majority. Traditional Goths will listen to all kinds of music, but favor and find the beauty in Classical, Opera, and Instrumental music. They appretiate great art, drama, music, or anything else that has a sense of "elegence" to it. They have a strong sense of symbolism, and often wear lots of necklaces or rings. Traditional Goths enjoy being around just about anyone as long as the people they are with arn't to immature. Most Traditional Goths are of Christian Faith, though can be of any religion.

2)Modern Goths: Modern Goths are much like Traditional Goths, but more "modern" as the name may suggest. They are bold, creative, and intelegent. Displaying many of the traits of a Traditional Goth. But they wear the kinds of clothes you might find at Spencers, Hot topic, or your local Renassance fair. Modern Goths listen to most kinds of music, but will perfer more Hardcore music or Metal. They like the feeling of being "Heavy" and "Extreme" while at the same time not breaking the law or anything. They are rebelious and will do everything in their power from becoming a conformist. Most of them enjoy the Fine Arts, but in a different light from Traditional goths. Modern Goths love to be with freinds, and in large groups just hanging out.

3) Punk Goths: Punk Goths are not at all like any other kinds of Goths. Punk Goths wear the kind of spiky, studded, covered in black clothes a Modern Goth might wear, but similarities end there. Punk Goths are as the name suggests. Punks. They are usually nice people but they do enjoy breaking the rules most of the time. They listen to usually nothing less hardcore then Trash Metal and don't have as great respect for the fine arts as other Goths do.
They simply enjoy looking and acting tougher then the average joe.

4)Emo Goths: Now, I know alot of you people out there think Emo's are horrible posers that wish they were the opposite sex, slit their wrists, and want all the attention in the world. Emo Goths are alot different.
Emo Goths are usually from families that don't function well. For example, one of their parents may be an alchoholic or a stoner. Perhapes the death of a dear friend of relative, or maybe just feeling alone. Emo Goths wear pretty much nothing but black, sometimes with studs. Usually wearing Black skater brand T shirts or Band T shirts with black or blue jeans. Emo Goths have great respect for the fine arts, and usually listen to Punk Rock, Altrernative, or metal. Some Emo Goths do harm themselves, some see it as a distraction or a temperary escape from the stress they may be under. Emo Goths do not HAVE to be under stress to be an Emo Goth, but stress is what may lead to it. Emo Goths are usually creative in their own ways, and like to be alone maybe with a small group of friends. They hate crowded rooms and being with large mobs of people.

5)Black Goths: Black Goths are usually good people, but some may call them "Evil". Most Black goths are Wiccans, Satanists, or of other "Unusual" Religions. They beleive in magic and curses. Most Black Goths are nice people, someone you can have a normal conversation with. Some of them are a bit like punk Goths, like breaking the rules. The personality of a Black Goth really depends on their Religion. Not all "Satanic" Black Goths are the kind of people that want everyone to die though, some of them are as normal as you are. Black Goths enjoy being with people much like themselves, and enjoy all kinds of music. Usually Classical, Traditional, or "Black Metal". Black Goths may wear long black robes or Jackets. Sometimes wearing normal clothes.

So as you can see there are many times of Goths as there are many types of people. Do not misjudge them simply because they look "Demonic" or like something out of a horror movie. Get to know one first. All Goths display individuality proudly. Which is what makes them a Goth. Not all Goths have to wear black or studded Leather. "Goth" is more of a personality then it is a style.
Look at that guy! He looks like a Traditional Goth.

originally interesting original inspiring subculture inspired by the cure. has now sunk to a load of losers dresing in black and leather coats threatening anyone who goes near them with knuckledusters, or even more fatal, the smell that seems to radiate off them. think anybody that smiles is a chav.no-one understands or is good as them even tho they hate themselves. listen to slipknot and korn. clothes must be almost all black, hair must be dyed unless naturally black. goth girls show far much more flesh than wanted by anyone. has two offspring tribes-grungers(look for the nirvana hoodies) and emos(at least 10 piercings, stumbling around blindly due to hair covering eyes.

A fucking shit bag that smells like John Kerry.
Dude I went to the local hick store and bought some bags of goth to keep my garden fertile.

It has been said that the only thing worst than a conformist is the one who conforms to nonconformist standards. In essence, that is what has become of the goth subculture. Originally a sharp reaction to preps and jocks, the goth standard has melted down into a standard that cannot be deviated from. Modern day goths follow the same routine and habits: They listen to metal and death metal music, such as Slipknot and Led Zeppelin; they dress in nothing but black; they wear clothing from the unusual (fishnet) to the bizzare (high-top black leather boots); they have many piercings on their body, including (but not limited to) the eyebrows, tongue, belly-button, and lips; they shop at Hot Topic; they describe themselves as 'twisted' or 'dark'. There are more examples I can think of, but by now, you should have a clear mental picture of what a goth is. We all know a goth; (s)he sticks out like a sore thumb. The goth subculture is burning itself up, because it was originally a reaction to conformism. Now, it has simply creatly a new standard to conform to.
There goes that goth chick, with her leather outfit and mowhawk hair dyed green.
