Let me state a few facts first, beginning with self-experience. I've started developing into the whole goth lifestyle back in late '04, starting out by wearing black. I wasn't into the whole Marilyn Manson or Linkin Park bullshit at that time, because I knew they weren't goth bands. After the whole black clothings, I started getting into goth rock(ex: Bauhaus, Lacuna Coil, Moonspell, HIM, The 69 Eyes). Then afterwards, other sets of metal was what I started listening to as well(excluding Nu-Metal). At first, I thought that I was never going to change my image. But that obviously wasn't true.

However, the goths of what I saw, were different from the goths of today. The goths back then were there to live life on the "darker" sides of things, meaning that they would abolish of whatever that is related to the mainstream. Those who were different. Those who were unique. Those who had their own style in clothings, words, and what not. The whole "goth" scene developed from a germanic/barbaric tribe that invaded the Roman Empire. The first kind of goths were known as the "visigoths", or aka The Noble Ones. They sacked the Roman Empire, otherwise known as the "mainstream" of that time.. so I'm pretty sure you can compare that to the gothic scene of my time.

Then suddenly, the whole goth scene started to evolve ONCE again. Kids are now transforming the scene into a trend, buying merchandise after merchandise, giving the impression as if they're buying candy from a store. They worship sellout stores such as hot topic, and claim to be "different".. but yet, they all dress the same, act the same, have the same desire of wanting to be "different", and considering themselves "rebellious teens". The thing is, these morons don't know that shit such as Hot Topic or MTV are nothing but a bunch of sellout brainwashing companies. Why do you think they charge such a ridiculous and pointless amount of money for merchandise? It's simple. They're trying to make money by selling out merchandises. And these "rebelious" goths are following them.

So basically, if you really want to be unique, different, rebellious, or what not.. the only thing you would really need to do is to be yourself, because that's one of the unique traits that most people don't possess nowadays.

Do I still listen to goth rock? Of course. Do I still listen to black/death/thrash/speed metal? Definitely. Do I still dress in black? Yes, more than often. Do I go around acting rebellious by wearing eyeliner and painting my nails black, and prancing around graveyards and worship Marilyn Manson for a living? FUCK NO.
retarded teen angst goth kid: dude... I'm like... so different from those Britney Spears loving conformists.... and I hate society... and that makes me rebellious and different...

me: no dude, hating society doesn't make you a "rebel", it makes you a douche bag.

RTAGK: well you're just a dumb conformist, that's all. try living in my shoes, then you'll see how much I have to suffer.

me: go shove a tube down your throat, pour oil on the tip, and flare a matchstick and light it on fire, you goth-cut-yourself-kid. why don't you try living in a third world country, then you'll understand the true meaning of "suffer". Just knowing your presence disgusts me, you imbred cunt.

goth: Sans history lesson, goths fall into two categories:
1. People, usually quiet misfits, who are often quite intelligent and creative. They tend to focus on the darker side of life, particularly human nature.
2. more common High school/college students who, by dressing in black and listening to heavy metal, attempt to make sure everyone around them is aware of how cool and individualistic they are. That their individualism centers on dressing, thinking, and acting like everyone else in the clique doesn't seem to bother them. Can often be found writing bad psuedo-suicidal poetry in wirebound notebooks. They usually drop the facade as soon as they realize that no one around them, including their parents, is shocked any more.

1. "Hey, see the goth over there? Go ask to see her artwork. It's really cool."
2. "Ohmigod, did you, like, read the new Anne Rice book? I am, like, so glad I'm a goth!"

Initially a musical genre that emerged in the late 70s post punk era, Goth evolved into a full-blown sub culture a few years later with the evolution of Gothic fashion and imagery. A movement with a seemingly infinite ability to re-invent itself Goth has survived over 2 decades and has continued to evolve and grow in this time. However this propensity to re-invent itself has lead to a form of “identity crisis of Goth” in which even its most fervent adherents can no longer agree on a definitive answer to the question “What is Goth”.

In recent years the music industry has applied the term “Goth” rather broadly to various musical styles, which they seem unable to categorise, resulting in some confusion between various genres and the fans thereof. Unlike many of the subcultures than went before Goth does not seek to rebel against society, highlight its flaws (as was the case with the punks of the 70s) or define itself in terms of opposition to other sub cultural groupings (as was the case with the mods and the rockers of the 60s). As press interest in the genre continues, other sections of society have begun to define normality as “that which is opposed to Goth,” a common mainstream reaction faced by all subcultures at one time or another.
Goth music originated in the late 70s and has evolved and reinvented itself many times since

goths are just people like everyone else and just because were not what others think is "normal" were suppsoed to be some kind of freaks. we dont drink blood,we dont hate everything, and yes believe it or not we do laugh!
we dont do it for attenton, we do it because we are individuals.we are just people who like different things, and we dont need any other groups making us feel like were lower than them. just because they are small minded idiots that clearly have nothing better to do with there life but to make others feel stupid just because were different. whatever u are u have a right to be it.so ignore anyone else that tries to be "clever" by shouting dumb stuff at u.

I have a lot of friends who follow the Goth subculture. Yes, Goths mainly dress themselves in black and possibly some black nail varnish and listening to metal tunes and such, but saying that all of them are drug-addicted, suicidal satanists is a pathetic generalisation. Not all Goths are like that, in fact i haven't met one of them with that kind of lifestyle. And even if they are, its their choice, and they don't deserve the hassle they get from close-minded idiots.
Leave Goths alone. Its their choice what to do with their life. You wouldn't like it if someone insulted and beated on you due to your lieftyle, would you?

1. Tribe of barbarians that invaded the Romans.

2. People use this to describe themselves when they are ignorant little bastards that have nothing better to do in life than mope around, be depressed, and talk about suicide. There is a better label for these people: posers.

3. Usually creative, strong, independent thinkers who are fun to be around and generally don't care about popularity. They attract friends who are like them, who aren't necessarily gothic but enjoy a good time and know how to think for themselves. Even if people you label "gothic" and stay away from look scary, actually try talking to them. You'll find that generally they are funny and interesting and aren't afraid to say what they think.

4. Goth music. Buahaha. Good stuff. Think Nine Inch Nails. Yaay. o0

5. People are not always poser goths just because they like "poser" bands like Linkin Park and Evanescence. Though they are NOT goth bands, there are some truly gothic people who just enjoy their songs because they like the tunes and stuff. Just because a few of Evanescence's songs have the word "suicide" in them doesn't mean that all the people who like them cut themselves up for no apparent reason.
But sadly, there are very many people who call themselves goth, are all depressed and STUPID, and listen to those bands just because they think that they're going to be cool because they're listening to *ooh* death and suicide and brokennes... god, people like that make me angry. Sooo angry.
1. Your history teacher: "So you've got your West Goths, and your East Goths, and the Vandals, and they invaded the Romans, and..."
You: -Not listening- Zzzzz...

2. Rich ass kid who has nothing beter to do than whine: "I'm a goth, my life sucks, go away, I think I'll kill myself now, BTW do you know I'm actually a vampire?"

3. Some... person: "You know that goth girl that always looks uber scary? Well I actually talked to her, and she's really nice..."

4. Duh: Avril Lavigne = NOT goth music NEVER NEVER NOOOO

5. a) I guess I like Linkin Park and Evanescence, but I'm not a suicidal freak or anything... I just like the way their music sounds.
b) Lyk OMG i'm a goth and i can prove it look i LOVE evanescence and lp and i slit my wrist...

I hate all you steriotpyical bastards! I am gothic, I do not hate everyone. I DO NOT WEAR MAKE UP! I do not think im a vampire, i do not worship satin, i do not hate people because they dont dress "goth" i do not hate preps just because they are preps. People just see a kid wearing all black clothes and chains and stuff like that and they all think "omfg! its a santin worshiper!" thats really dumb. Because all the goths I know are WAY cooler and nicer than the prepy kids I know. So stop being so god damn steriotypical before i go "GOTHIC" on you and suck your blood!
Gothic people are just people that enjoy listening to GOOD music. Even though they dont dress "normal" they tend to think more normal than your average american.

Ah, the widely controversial "goth" label. I say label because for most, that's all it is. A simple category for putting people into little, clearly-marked boxes. It can mean as little as a stereoptype or as much as a way of life. What any person's view is on the Gothic culture depends mostly on their experience with it, their past experiences in general, their susceptibility to outside influences, and their attitude on the strange and the unknown.

The term "Gothic" has had many definitions over the course of history. I believe other definitions have about covered the origins, so I'll instead focus on the most contemporary incarnation.

Common "Gothic" Myths:
1) All goths are suicidal: If you yourself believe this, give yourself a good slap upside the head with a dictionary. The majority of Goths are fun-loving, happy people who view suicidal people as somewhat disgusting and do not include them in their definition of what is goth.
2) All goths wear black: Again, slap yourself upside the head with a dictionary if you firmly believe this. Any true goth will admit that they like wearing color on occasion. In particular, cybergoths enjoy very much the brightest colors known to the human mind.
3) All goths listen to marilyn manson: Sigh. Look, kids. Whether manson is goth or not I don't care to discuss, as there are valid arguments on both sides, but the fact is, a good chunk of true goths don't even LIKE manson. Some goths don't even like rock/metal/hardcore music. GASP!

Moreover, Gothic cultue is simply a very deep connection to the darker side of life, an acknowledgement that everything is not "peachy," and that things like sadness and grief are very real and must be dealt with in order to maintain a healthy mind and body.
"I'm so goth, i cut myself all the time."

"I'm not goth."
