Any form of metal music

Gothic metal, and death metal, are not goth.

Most likely if its mainstream, its not goth.

Fashion:

There are many kinds of gothic fashion. But the basic things are boots, mostly dark attire, pale skin, hair that isn't brown. The "do it yourself" is a heavily emphasized part of the culture. Check gothic tribes for more detail.

General Pieces: Fishnet, Black nail varnish, colored hair, dark eyeliner, leather, metal (steel), buckles, bondage pants, hobble skirts, dress shirts, ties, top hats, red lipstick, black lipstick, dress shoes, combat boots.

Truths and False.

From the point of goth creation, its been morphed many times. Goth has been hit by many different accusations such as violance and satanic rituals.

Myth: Goths are violent
Truth: Its wrong to accuse a whole group based on one person's action, so its a maybe. But goth does not support violence.

Myth: Hot topic is goth
Truth: No, hot topic is a coporation. Goth originates from punk, and punk has emphasized on anti-corporation/government. In short terms, hot topic markets for mass appeal and attention, so no its not.

Myth: Goths are satanic.
Truth: Although many arts can depict vampires and death, even Satanist do not stand for evil or harm to others. Some goths could be satanic, but goth has no real links between satanism. Most goths are secular, but some are religious.

Myth: Goths have tattoos and piercings from head to toe.
Truth: Some have them, some don't.

Myth: Goths are sad
Truth: Not all of them, sure goth emphasizes the darker things in life, but not all of them are sad people, normal people can be sad, sadness is an emotion, emotions make you human. And goths are human.

Myth: Goth is nothing but a clique.
Truth: This is apart of the "morphing and warping". Goth was never centered around excluding others or trying to be different. Like many counter-cultures, its about being yourself and doing what you like, yet has similar interest and beliefs. Being goth isn't pidgeon holing yourself. Pidgeon holing is when you take someone's belief and claim it as your own.

In the mainstream

Even though goth isn't mainstream, there are some mainstream things that are gothic.

Mainstream Things

Movies: The Crow, Queen of the Damned, Interview with a Vampire
Books: The Vampire Chronicles
Music: The Cure

Goth Tribes

Although there are no "rules" in goth that someone must follow, there are a particular scene.

Victorian Goth AKA Romantigoth: Goths with a touch of victorian age in their life such as dress shirts, capes, cloaks.

Interest: Renaissance, Medieval age, Paganism, Occult,

Mallgoth: Probably the biggest uproot in the mainstream, but not goth even though mostly judged as goth. Without judgment on the individuals personality, a mallgoth is someone who has no knowledge of goth history, and labels bands like Marilyn Manson and Slipknot as goth, and shops at hot topic. Usually in the teen era.

Interest: Hot topic, metal, alternative rock,

Cyber Goth AKA Rivethead: A mix between cyber culture with goth elements and appearence. Usually baggy pants and neon with cyber like hair. Has more of an interest in EBM and Industrial Bands.

Fetish Goth: A goth with an interest in bongage and takes BDSM fashion and lifestyle.

Interest: Bondage, PVC, fetish material.

Deathrocker: A goth with an interest in deathrock, horror punk and psychobilly music. Fashion wise fishnet and torn dark clothing with combat boots.

Interest: Deathrock, Psychobilly, DIY fashion.

Elder Goth: A goth who has been around since goth creation or a goth over 40.

Vampire Goth: I'M A VAMPIRE!!! LOL

Goth-Related Terms and People

The Batcave: A club in England where goths have met since its creation

Columbine: A violent shooting that presented the first so called "goth violence" (NOTE: shooters were not goths)

Rozz Williams: The frontman of Christian Death, who founded american goth, and founded the Deathrock genre.

Siouxsie Sioux: The godmother of Goth, one of the first post-punk/goth bands that influenced bands later on.

Dinah Cancer: The frontwoman of 45 Grave, one of the first deathrock bands. "The Queen of Deathrock"

Bela Lugosi: Not a goth, but played and had a cult following in his horror movies, even after death.

Personality: There is no "rule" of personality, but most goths are open minded, witty, anti-prejudice, deep, quiet and artistic.

Don't judge a group based on one person's action, were all different, but similar sometimes.

Conclusion.

Goth is a culture that emphasizes the darker, deeper and romantic sides of life that strays away from the mainstream and pays attention to individuality.
Goth: Hi
Person: Hi
Goth: I'm doing good.
Person: Lets have fun
Goth: Ok! :

Goths. If any of the people who wrote the above negative defenitions have actually ever even talked to a 'goth', then i would be greatly surprised. There are many types of 'goths'. There are:
Perky-goths
Metal-heads
Rivet-heads
Cyber-goths
Trad-goths
Metallers
Grungers
God-Knows-what
Pure-Norwegian-black-death-metallers
non-goths (wannabees)
Fetishers

You will know at least one or more of the above. Perky-Goths are the most widely known Goths in the 'Gothic culture' these people are always happy and are also generally the ones who get stereotyped. Metal-Heads and rivet-heads are basically the same apart from the fact that metal-heads are much more agressive than rivet heads. It is hard to determine between a Cyber-Goth and a Candy-raver. The only difference is that Cyber-Goths listen to slightly heavier music. Trad-Goths are a dying breed. They are mostly made-up the remenants of the Romantic-Goths form the 80's. These are the people who you associate with the stereo-typical goth (e.g. The people who think they're Vampires and only come out at night).
Metallers come along in the same catagory as metal-heads and rivet-heads. Grungers are more associated with skaters. They generally listen to Nirvana and Alice-in-chains. Never get these people along with metal-heads, rivet-heads or metallers, they will start the biggest mosh pit seen to man.
God-knows-whats are the people who you cannot put into a catagory. These people are not easy to find but look hard enogh, and you'll find them. Pure-Norwegian-black-death-metallers, probably the most frightening people you will ever come across.
Non-Goths are mainly people who think they are goth bacause they listen to 'Sum 41' or 'H.I.M' and they follow the 'Gothic Fashion' - wear all black, only come out at night think they're vampires et cetera... but they only do this to impress or scare the general public. During the day they're 'Normals'.
Fetishers are the people who wear P.V.C non stop, even if its 90 degrees outside. Also closely linked with Cyber-Goths.
Finally i would just like to say that there are many more types of goths than this. These are just a few examples. So, next time you want to ridicule one of us, take a step back and think about what you are saying before you say it.
Not all goths self-harm, or do drugs, or smoke, or drink exessive amounts of alcohol, in fact i can name many more townies end up in hospital with alcohol posioning than goths. So please think about what you are saying bacause frankly, we dont care. You are a miniscule part of our lives that we could do without.

The word Goth has been used to describe several things over the years many of which are completely idiotic, whereas others are completely legitimate but surprising nonetheless.

A) The original Goths were an ancient East Germanic Scandinavia tribe. The Goths eventually split into two groups after migrating towards the Baltic Sea: The Visigoths and The Ostrogoths.
Though at one point in time the term Goth was used to describe barbarians (as that is what The Visigoths were famous for) that term is no longer used. Another import fact; neither the Visigoths or the Ostrogoths had their own religion, they were Germanic paganism and Arianism. Implication: Goth is not a religion.

B) Goth was also an old architectural style which began in the 12th century. (An example of this style is St. Denis Abbey or Westminster Abbey)

C) Goth can also used to describe literature. Gothic literature was dark romantic dating back to the 1700's. Two of the possibly most notable authors from the time were Edgar Allen Poe, and Mary Shelley.

D) The most common usage of the word Goth however is the description of a fan of Goth Rock and a member of the subculture. The subculture began primarily with the release of Bela Lugosi's Dead by Bauhaus though some beg to differ and say bands such as Joy Division and The Mission outdate Bauhaus. To belong to the gothic subculture appreciation of the music is essential, while there is more to the subculture than just the music, many people fail to realize that someone fashion choice or attitude does not necessarily make them Goth.
Man those Visigoths sure were barbaric.
Goth! architecture is so beautiful.
I was reading The Fall of the House of Usher the other day, man was that Goth.
Yesterday I ran into my friend, sometimes she's such a pretentious Goth.

Goth is not a label. Goth is a real culture that expresses the beauty in darkness and morbidity. Goths usually wear all black, the color of their soul. They don't just wear anything black, the black clothes are more unique and elegant. Some Goths go beyond the black clothes and they wear thick eyeliner and black lipstick. Some make their faces white like a ghost and dye their hair unnatural colors. Goths can be Satan worshippers, Atheists, Christians, Pagans, Wiccans, or any religion. There are some people who give Goths a bad name and other Goths call them posers, but that is simply not true. In a garden, though some vegetables may be rotten, that doesn't mean they aren't vegetables. And as for Goths and non-conformity, what does Goth have to do with non-conformity??? If people join the Gothic Culture just because they want to be non-conformists then that is a very bad reason to become Gothic. People can be Gothic and still be individuals. I'm a Goth and I'm also an individual and I don't try to be different because there isn't any point in it. And Goths aren't all attention seekers. Many of us just feel comfortable looking a certain way, even if we have thick eyeliner and black lipstick, a pale face, and green hair. Not all Goths are angst-filled morons who have their mind set on blowing up their school. Alot of Goths don't even go to school; there are many adult Goths as well as teens. And I hate the word poser. People call other Goths posers to make themselves feel good. It's name calling, that's all it is, and it's very puerile. Calling someone a poser is definitely a form of bullying and it needs to be stopped.
I am a Goth because Goth is my soul.

I hate it when Goths get called Satan worshippers and it's not true and instead of just saying "I'm not a Satan worshipper" they go and say something negative about people who truly worship Satan.

I am a Satan worshipping Goth.

A goth is just a person, usually one who appreciates both the "positive" and "negative", the "yin" and "yang", "good" and "evil" aspects of life. Usually goths believe that there's nothing in this world that can be completely spelled out in black and white. Usually goths tend to wear black clothing, ornate with metal, but also often enjoy interspersing it with bright colours. A lot of goths dye their hair or have piercings, or wear lots of makeup... which is more an artistic outlet than anything. I guess goths just focus on the dark side of things, because to do so is to be on sort of the "other side" of most of society, which they do enjoy, regardless of what they say. Often goths shop at the hot topic, which doesn't automatically define one as a poseur. Nor does it make someone gothic to shop there. Gothic music doesn't make much of a presence in society these days, though darkwave/industrial/synthpop/black,death metal are often mistaken for "gothic" music. Music that is actually gothic? Joy Division, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus, The Cure, etc. These bands are listened to by many people who are not gothic, and no one at the time really labelled it as such. Gothics are just members of an almost completely undefined subculture. Gothics are generally good, benevolent, empathetic, artistic, intelligent, well-read people.
There is the odd asshole, but the same can be said for every group. Gothics almost always can appreciate all kinds of music. Many gothics enjoy listening to Enya. Many gothics enjoy listening to Motorhead. Many gothics enjoy listening to New Order. See the point? There is no real definition, but Gothics is Gothics. We just are what we are, and we only ask for a bit of kindness and understanding, even though we are just a bit strange. =)
Examples of gothics:

Pure goth: Usually found dressing in sort of old-school european style clothing, with lots of black. Often found listening to Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, etc. Often is a strong supporter of animal rights, or a vegan. Usually subscribes to some form of paganism.

Industrial-Gothics:
Usually wears clothing that depicts a post-apocalyptic Mad Max style motif, often seen with a trenchcoat. Most often have a "harder" personality, but unlike pure "Rivetheads" the classic industrial club-goer, they tend to be a bit less immature and full of rage. Often found listening to music like Nine Inch Nails, Switchblade Symphony, Skinny Puppy.

Perkigoff^_^: This is the kind of gothic who often wears a lot of clothing that is considered gothic, but conveys a lot less serious and sombre attitude. Can be found listening to just about anything, and often this person is more of a "weekend" goth... i.e. they work normal jobs and generally have a lot of friends that are not goths, as well as friends who are. This is I have to say the most common type of goth.

Common Goth: Sort of a cross between all of the above. Most goths dress gothically on a very regular basis, unless at work. Most goths are generally very happy, friendly people. Most goths are also very somber at times.

In other words, that was useless babble! But hopefully it's helpful to you.
